Rear Brake Shields

Rear Brake Shields
I just installed some KVR cross-drilled rotors on my car, but I think it would look a lot better in the rear without those nasty rusted shield thingys behind the rotors. I'm not totally sure of their purpose, other than to keep the dust under control, although it's not much of a problem for the rear brakes anyway. I am thinking about removing them if it's possible. It was getting late and I wanted to get the car back together, so I didn't get to take a good look at them. Has anyone attempted to remove them before?

they can be removed, it's no problem. I haven't had them on my car for two years now, and no big deal.
what you'll have to do is remove the caliper, rotor, and rear hub, then you'll see 4 12 or 14mm bolts back there. remove those, and the caliper bracket will come off and let you at the dust shield. I forget thish part is on top, but simply remove the shield and put everything back together. the hardest part is getting the big nut off for the hub. the rest is all easy- if you can change the brake pads yourself, then you can do this job.
with air tools, it's a 20 minute job, total.
(and just in case you're wondering, no you don't have to remove the brake hose and open up the system. just unbolt the caliper from the bracket and move it to the side.)
