I believe most of my dash switches have LED's in them and they look good but I had to ditch the LED map lights as most of them didn't work.

 

I would love to add the LED map & dome lights. I am also going to put an LED strip across my headlights like an eyebrow

 

If you want the LED map light assembly I have I can send it to you but some of the lights do not work, otherwise I am going to trash it.

I also have a set of EL reverse glow gauges that badazzsupamax has on his pic. But I haven't install them because I decided to stick with black face gauges and it uses a separate on/off switch which I'm not sure if it can be tapped into the illumination circuit.

 

It still looks nice it brings out that cool green tint it lights up the dash verry nice

 

Thanks. It's actually pretty easy to install. I installed the gauges myself and paid an auto electrician, which you can find at any place that does LED or HID installs, and just pay them $35 for the wiring. It took like 10 minutes. I had the original digital dash that goes to the 1990 Maxima GXE but they told me that to install that one would've been a nightmare. So I gave it away and got the indiglo. Next best thing I guess.

 

That is because Nissan for some strange reason wires the maplights in all their cars with reverse polarity. I actually make LEDs that work with Nissan maplights.

 

Incandescents are bi-polar, so technically what you said is impossible. But the standard is center positive, which they are. The problems you've had must be from the LED bulb replacement not conforming to the standard.

 

No. EVERY BA9 map light I have ever seen does NOT work properly in our Maximas. It's reverse from what it should be. When I sell my kits, this is something I have to wire "backwards" due to this very fact.

 

I had the same BA9 issue. Just popped out the overhead panel with the light/ sunroof switches and flipped the connecting wires and voilà

 

Your right about the bulb being bi polar but the connection by definition cannot be bi polar: one contact has to be the cathode, one contact has to be the anode. This poses a problem when you try to use a Ba9s LED because unlike incandescents they are NOT bi polar and unlike T5 or T10 wedge bases they cannot simply be turned 180 degrees to fix the issue. Hence, as I stated in the previous post I actually make 360 degree LEDs that work with Nissan maplights with the cathode (-) at the bottom and the anode (+) on the sides of the Ba9s base. Just about all Nissan maplight connectors do not adhere to the bottom (+) / sides (-) standard hence, why some sellers on Ebay sell reverse polarity LEDs as well.

 

Yep that is only one of the two ways to rectify the issue. Swap the wire positions or make/buy a reverse polarity Ba9s LED.

 

Again, the problem is with the aftermarket LED replacements. The discussion was specifically about the 3rd gen map light, which you gave the reason of Nissan reversing the polarity. The 3rd gen map light, which is the same exact part in several other cars, is indeed center positive as pretty much every socket based power connector should be, from cigarette lighters to power supply jacks, to light bulbs. I have a J30 map light here and out of curiosity confirmed that it as well is center positive.

The illumination dimmer is on the ground side of that circuit on most Nissans, maybe that's what you're thinking of.

 

Really? You got me on that one because I hear at least one other on this very thread with the exact same issue as I had; the connector to the maplight had a reversed polarity versus the standard most Ba9s LEDs are built. (center + / sides-) This has been a consistant issue I have run across with Nissan of all models doing back to the 3rd Gen all the way up to a 2008 6th Gen Max. If you somehow have experienced different, lucky you but the rest of us have issues using LEDs in our maplights so I am just trying to impart a little knowledge seeing how I have done quite a bit of LED mods.

 

Maybe someone did the "pull the panel and reverse the wires" trick to hectic's car before he got it...

 

The BA9 LED bulbs i got from SBL work fine in my 3rd gen. The LEDs referred to earlier are component/string LEDs custom fabbed into a 3G sunroof switch/map light assembly, ala Brad92SE
