I have a 1994 GXE with 106,000 miles. Original transmission and it's completely smooth up shifting. However when downshifting when I get approximately 25 miles an hour where it's switching from third down to second, i'm hearing a clunking sound as the engine revs up and downshifts.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

 

Motor mounts or lower control arm bushings.

Open the hood, get in and start the engine, apply brake and put the car in "D" drive, feather the gas pedal and look to see if the engine rocks back and forth, if it does then you need motor mounts.
