Tranny Rebuild?

Tranny Rebuild?
I've been experiencing a frustraing tranny noise in my car for a while now. It makes an unusual grinding noise whenever the car has the clutch engaged (in gear or in neutral). It really is annoying to be cruising down my street at 25 mph in 3rd gear, when the sound just drones on and on. I guess it's not really a grinding, it sounds more like something metallic is being thrown around (kinda like ball bearings in a soda can or something). My first thought was the throwout bearing, but I've been told that isn't the problem. I had 2 mechanics look at the car, and both of them said it'll take a tranny rebuild or replacement to cure the problem. Has anyone ever heard or this problem?

Well, I had taken it to a mechanic while under the impression that it was the throwout bearing, and he said that it was a problem with the transmission itself. A mechanic at the Nissan dealership also said this when I asked him about it while he was diagnosing my broken VTC's. Both of them suggested either a rebuild or a new tranny. I was just wondering if anyone knew about this specific problem, because I would like to know more about it.
