Engine running bad...need help diagnosis

I have a 1993 Maxima SE with the DOHC engine 5 speed. Recently I've been experiencing a shutter on acceleration in all gears and it is sluggish while driving too. Also I have a rough start and it will stall soemtimes when I come to a light and pop it in neutral. It also smells of exhuast constantly now. It seems to be a fuel/air mixture issue and I am going to do an ecm/ecu test tonight and see what codes come up. It seems though that these symptoms fit so many possible problems. Anyone else had these issues and what has helped you figure out the problem. I would appreciate any info!
So far I have replaced the o2 sensor and the fuel filter.

Have you done a tune up outside of just changing the fuel filter? If not I'd start with a tune up doing air filter, plugs and wires to coils. Also check to see if you have a faulty coil or fuel injector. Try checking the resistance on the injectors to see if they are in spec. Should be between 10- 14 ohms.

When I first got the car(almost a year) I did replace the spark plugs but not wires and replaced the fuel filter. I did think of fuel injectors and will check those too.

Change the air filter and check vacume lines aswell. If the CEL is on scan it and get the codes. If your having a specific cylinder misfire start there and try swapping the coils to see if the mis changes cylinders.
