that was going to be one of my stupid questions for the day too. I did this same thing this past weekend put in blue bulbs looks cool its extremely cheap and quick, plus you can clean the inside of the plastic cover over the gauges get the dust out.
humm.......

everything glows on them 3 or 4 bulbs in back of the whole system
when your doing this the lights unscrew from the back of the Guage cluster. You DO NOT take them out by pulling the face of the guage off.
- for the ppl that dont take there dash apart once a week
........... its EZ just keep unscrewing all the screws you see untill things start falling out .. to get the main part of the dash out (this is the part that has 3 vents with it and that big hole that meats up with the guages) you have to lower your wheel all the way and squeezz it out .. not to much .. you could brake it.. if you need help IM me peace out AOL IM:ChrisCheezer

I've been back there a few times. ChrisCheezer, was it really dusty back there? mine was haha. I am curious to see how the Red looks back there. I was thinking about doing the same thing. Right now I have Xenon back there and the light output is awesome and buck whiter than the condom bulbs.
Here's a pic of the superwhite:
The color is a little off and the brightness is a little low, but it looks awesome in person.

The Right Bulbs....
I was thinkin' of doin' this to, but im just not sure if i wanna go xenon or blue. Besides that, wouldn't it be better and brighter if you used the 194 LED bulbs that they have out now? Anyone have them??

dude dont use blue, because the bulbs that you take out have a blue "bulb condom
" on them .. so i guess it would look the same ... i like the hyper white look .. you can try just taking the bulb comdom off and see what it looks like..PEACE.. pics soon my camra is being replaced YAY

There are brighter bulbs
I have experimented with 194's as well as 168's on my 91SE (whiteface). The 168's tend to be brighter, but are not recommended OEM. However, I have had them in my dash for 9 months so far with no adverse affects to report. If you do try the 168's, you should get temperature rated bulbs of no more than 4150k (other experienced blub heads feel free to correct me here).
One last note, the blue coated hyper-white bulbs (not to be confuesed with a standard blue bulb) will give off an almost purple hue on the white face gauge. Fine if you like that -- I didn't. So look for an un-coated bulb.
And completely off topic...
Test drove a 2002 SE 6spd a couple of days ago, and the sales rep said "go ahead and open it up". Let's just say, I left him with a nervous giggle that he couldn't seem to shake.
The stock 255hp made my normally spirited 160hp SE seem pretty damn boring.
It took a couple back days later to re-adjust to my 91SE, but there's also alot more money in my bank account than those 2k2 boys.

Hadman

the way the light is set up, there are four bulbs, and those slots are supposed to be evenly distributed among the gauges, in hopes they light everything up. normally, with halogens it's not a big deal, but with the LEDs, there are a few "hot spots" the leds project light foward, they're not too uniform like halogens, that's why the LEDs look funny. but they're a lot brighter!

Re: There are brighter bulbs
Just ordered 8 194's from NOPIonline.com. $1.15 each. Gonna replace my door bulbs and the 4 behind the dash. Will have pics as soon as I change them out. Oh, did I have to mention I ordered green?

there are four holes in the rear of the gauge cluster, each a few inches apart from each other. halogen bulbs distirbute light evenly and uniformly. LEDs only distrube light forward. when you put LED bulbs in your housing, you end up with hotspots because the light is not uniform.
is that good enough for you danny?

u see my dash..yeah that's LEDs. u see ANY light variations? NO.
Let's go to school.
the LED in the housing is dependent on the advertised "viewing angle" what does that mean? it's how much light is dispersed to the sides. some LEDs like u said have a very narrow viewing angle. some are a lot wider. it's all dependent on how deep the LED was set into the socket and the quality of the LEDs it self.
if you get cheap LEDs then the viewing angles varies from bulb to bulb...manufacturing variations.
so your statement of LED only distributes light forward is FALSE.
it's dependent how the LED was made and what kind of LED.
so again i ask...do u have a clue what you're talking about?
go look at my dash again..tell me if you see light variation.

I described why my LEDs leave hot spots, that's what was asked. You don't need to be a jackass in each of your replies.
