rear brake upgrade

rear brake upgrade
ok, so i've been looking at big brake kits for my max, and i noticed this. if i do a big brake conversion, the front brakes will look great, and the rears will continue to look TINY!!!!!! ok, but get this, i was looking at 4th gen brakes and think i can do a rear disc conversion. i was going to put slotted or drilled rotors on the rear anyway, so buying the rear rotors is factored out of this. but i think if i use the 4th gen bracket and caliper, they will fit. . . . i'm not 100% sure yet, but i'm working on this. i know i know, the rears don't do that much, but i HATE upgrading one thing and not the other. if i upgrade the rears at least they won't look as puney as they do now!!!! anyway, any input would be appreciated. . . . .

I installed 11.5" rotors off an '89 turbo Z. The offset and thickness are the same as the '91 SE rear disks. As for the calipers, I just fabricated new spacers to space them out accordingly.
There are two pictures here: http://homepage.mac.com/m_e_kent/aut...ma_brakes.html
By the way, the big rear rotors are a much better upgrade than the Ztt front caliper/rotors. With the Z brakes, there wasn't really any increase in braking + the pedal has been soft ever since. The big rear brakes eliminate TONS of brake dive, and help trail braking immensely.
Hope that helped.

j30_vg30et....
FYI, the R32 front rotors are 11.75 x 1.25" rotors. that's an inch larger diameter and same thickness as the Z32 rotors.
I'm using the skyline rotors and wilwood Dynalite calipers right now.
Thus, you should be able to fit the skyline rotors and Z calipers under your wheels. diameter is the only problem. My 16" wheels only have a 13.75" inner diameter, due to the 3-piece construction. the bolt lip is right where the caliper runs in the wheel. The Z calipers are also much larger than the ones I'm using, so Z wheels may or may not be large enough to fit.
there is MUCH better brake performance with less pedal effort now. the pedal is kinda "mushy" at first, but it's much easier to modulate on hard braking. with my stock brakes, I'd press the pedal down and run into a brick wall of sorts on the pedal. it was horrible, and very hard to control under hard braking.
The pads for Z calipers will also be more plentiful, but a bit more expensive than the calipers I'm using. My pads are about $40-60/set, depending on compound.
for a few pics of the install, there's some on my webpage.
www.ee.utulsa.edu/~mblehm/pics/car/brakes/
I think the skyline rotors would be a very good upgrade on your car- especially considering the 300+ hp you're talking about.
(which I'll also be doing soon. VE30DE-T by summer, hopefully spring break! )
If you want to talk a bit more about the skyline brakes or want to feed me any info on your intercooler and setup, I'd be glad to hear from you.. PM or email me...

That's a nice job Matt.
I'm pretty sure the numbers listed on the page are correct.
R32 = 295mm -> 11.61"
Z32 = 280mm -> 11.02" (same as the stock Max diameter)
I had to turn something like 0.100" off the diameter to get them to fit. I'm running the stock lines + Porterfield R4S pads front and back.
As far as the rest of the project, it's been "done" for over a year now. The web page is about two years out of date. I'm trying to get it more current as it seems lots of others are running into problems I've come up with some sort of solution for. Not always the best one, but something.

I've heard everything from 290mm to 300mm on these rotors. I have no clue, not have I ever taken time to really measure. I've got another brand new set in the box, going to be cryo-treated next week sometime.. I might actually measure them then.
all I did was just bolt the suckers on and make a bracket to fit. hell, this isn't rocket science!!
