I am new here and i had a question about a exhaust for me 91 maxima GXE. Can I just buy the muffler or do I have to buy more than that? I'm on a limited budget. thanks a lot...

You can do just a muffler. It usually doesn't cost much to have it welded on either, at most muffler shops ($20-$40 I guess + muffler price). Whatever you do, DO NOT get a Apexi or Tenzo R muffler. I am not sure about others but, those will give your Maxima a ricey sound that will make you ashamed of your car. BTW, I have a '91 GXE too!

If you just want to change the look or sound of your car (ie, louder) for little money, just buy a performance muffler. Baffled mufflers are quieter than straight-through designs. Don't expect much at all in the way of horsepower gains since the rest of your exhaust is stock.

Mufflers usually run roughly $100 and up.

Try using the SEARCH to get some brand recommendations or just wander around the dozens of online performance/rice shops.

If you are just interested in looks/sound, than a louvered-core performance muffler would be fine and give your V6 a nice droan. If you are after the best in performance, and you can't afford to redo your whole exhuast system yet, invest in a perforated-core muffler. These have a much less restrictive internal design and are ideal for exhaust gas dispertion.

Kodysmax, you might want to seriously consider a Dynomax Race Magnum muffler from Jegs.com. Check it out here http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...314&prmenbr=76 It's only $59!!! Also, this Dynomax race magnum muffler makes our Maximas have more of a deep, throaty v8 rumble. Its definitely something to think about since its only $59. I'm about to buy 2 so I can rig up dual exhaust (with dual tip). Do a search for Dynomax if anyone wants to here other people's opinions of the nice v8 sound it gives. I think Borla Turbo and Dynomax Race Magnum are 2 of the best muffler choices for our cars. I've heard some of the others like Greddy are good but those seem to usually be expensive catback's.

BTW, isn't the stock 3rd gen exhaust 2.25"? I'm almost positive it is but just thought I'd ask in case anyone else wondered. In that case, the 2-1/4" is the one we'd need off that page on Jegs.com.

Is that muffler going to fit on the driver's side? Last time I looked under there, there wasn't that much room next to the spare tire well. I figured you would need to get a smaller round muffler (like Flyry) or one of those compact generic DTM mufflers to squeeze in there. Either that or let them hang really low....

yesterday, I spent an hour researching exhausts on the web. I've learned that volume is dependent on core design and overall length. For example, if you have a silencer on your gun, you want one with many holes and long barrel.
I can't recommend louvered core mufflers...It just doesn't make sense that you want protrusions in the pathway. Perforated core is the way to go. Make sure it's straight-through design: if you can look through the whole thing, that's good!
As others mentioned, don't expect much hp gains if you're just doing muffler.
If you're going for catback, the Sentra people say to buy your mandrel bends online (summit racing was recommended a few times). Look under your car and find out what kinda bends u need and length, then bring it to the muffler shop and have them weld it. Not all shops can mandrel bend and some will charge u plenty. Be safe and bring your own. I think VE's like 2.5" piping, but not sure.
My bro's got Apexi RS turbo on his 2k Max...sounds wonderful! But it's kinda loud, even when idling. It gurgles really well when acellerating.

I forgot to mention, if you want to quiet down your exhaust, get a resonator. It's kinda like a pre-muffler. If you're into hardcore quiet, get a glasspack perforated core tip too.
Be aware that tip diameter has nothing to do with tone or volume..just get something that looks nice and unrestrictive.

Thanks for the advise. Have you heard one of these on a max? I don't really even know what size to get for my 91 gxe! Help please! Do they have a round muffler for my car also, and what is the difference between a round muffler and a oval muffler?

Kodysmax, the Dynomax Race Magnum definitely sounds good. While I have not heard a 3rd gen with one, I have heard a '95 max with one and it sounded mean! Trust me, its the best thing you can get for $60. On the link I posted, I think you'd want to get one of the ones that is 2-1/4" (2.25"). Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the GXE's (not sure if its standard size for GXE and SE) have 2.25" piping, right?
