gutting the cat
some kid up here at my school gutted his catalytic converter and ran a pipe straight thru it, so that it looks like its there but doesnt restrict the exhaust at all. i was considering doing this but was wondering just how loud is this goin to make my car? im planning on gettin a less restictive muffler too. is this gonna be in the legal db range? this sounds like a good idea to me

doesnt sound too slick to me,high flow cats are almost as freeflowing as gutted cats and a lot more legal, from what i heard it gives you a deeper tone, nothing ridiculous..and with a universal muffler..sure less restrictive, but you still have the resonator which is restriction

I gutted one of m extra cats and lost power.. then again, I didn't stick a straight pipe in there, but left it hollow.. it's raspy and wheezy at the top end because of the turbulence. if you want it, pay for shipping and you can have it. save you a couple hours of work. that stuff isn't easy to get out.

im a bit confused now but i think im gonna give it a shot, i just gotta find some way to get a pipe inside of the cat that is equal diameter. should be fun
does anyone know how they are assembled?

Don't screw up your stock cat. I have one from my VE that's already gutted. I'll sell it to you cheap. You can have someone weld in a pipe on that one and still have your car up and running.

From the back it's not much louder. But the side gives it a nasty metal ringing sound. there isn't too much power increase either. not worth the time. took me 2 or 3 hours to do. you best bet is to just drill a hole strait through the middle. If i'm thinking right, that's kind of what they do on high flow cats.

Don't gut your cat. That is silly. You're not going to go any faster if you do, you'll just attract undesireable attention. Not to mention wake the neighbors...
I got a high flo cat from CatCo for like 80 bucks, and I got one from Random Tech for a little more than that. That's basically the same price you're gonna pay a muffler shop to put on a new stock one when you realise that your car sounds like it should have a confederate flag on the front and a shotgun rack in the rear window.

I'm no expert on this, but I've heard about how gains with (doing stuff to/replacing) the cat doesn't buy you much power-wise. OEM cats are pretty good flowing these days compared to the original pellet type decades ago.
Besides I think your exhaust gets smelly, not rotten egg necessarily, but if you know what a cat-less car smells like it IS worse. Not good for the environment either.
