Hesitation when shifting into drive??

When I shift my tranny into Drive it usually pauses 1-2 seconds before it engages. Usually have to keep pressure on shifter to have it engage. Anyone else ever have this problem?? Doesn't ever do it when I put in reverse.

i have the same problem. my mechanic said i might need to replace the whole shift lever unit to fix the problem. i have no idea how much that would cost.

I recently test drove a 93 SE that did the same thing. I chose to pass on the car for other reasons but the 93 GXE I have purchased from a coworker volunteered that his car (soon to be mine) does the same thing. He said he would move the shift lever 1/16 inch and it would engage. He was told by a dealer that it was $150 to adjust it out.

Sometimes with automatics, this happens when the motor mounts are bad. It happened once when I had a Pontiac Grand Am and it's happening again. The mechanic I trust said I need new motor mounts so I'm sure the problem is related to that.

I also have a rebuilt tran and started having the same problem. my mech told me it wash the bushings and this is common in this model. cost me $75.00 to fix and now shifts tight like new. I saw another thread here that says these bushings are very inexpensive if you're inclined to do it yourself.
