rebuild Tranny

I have a 90 Maxima. I bought it about 1 year ago for $3,500. Now its tranny is completly toasted.
I was told by a tranny repair shop that it would cost $1,600 to rebuilt the tranny . I asked him if I could buy a new one. He said that there is no new tranny for 90 Max.
I don't know what to do. should I rebuld the tranny? or just give up the car? $1,600 is lot of money for me. Any suggestions? Please.

$1600 is a great price...and yes there really aren't any "new" trannies forour cars. only used or rebuilt.....but its up to you if you want to spend the money, do you really want to keep the car?? if you do go through with it makes sure to add on an auxiliary cooler(~$50) and to get at least a 12month/XX,000 miles warranty, might cost a little extra but its worth the piece of mind!

you can't really compare prices and performance with "JDwyer2821" since he has a 5spd and you have an auto.

Your best bet is to go to your local advance auto
and by a rebuilt unit from accurate transmissions!
It is $1600.00 up front and you get $400.00 back when you bring in your old tranny! Just make sure you change your clutch and refinish your flywheel while your getting all this done! Good Luck!

I went to advanced auto and they said that they would not be able to match what I got for a price. The guy was suprised that a dealership beat there price

I bought a BRAND NEW automatic trans for my 90 gxe 6 months ago for $2375. YES, IT WAS BRAND NEW from a dealer. Its worth the extra $$ for the peace of mind. Usually a reman or rebuilt has too many used parts to last very long.

they don't use "used" parts in reman trannies.....they use new parts, thats why its call "remanufactured". and are you sure your tranny is new or did they just tell you that!?

In a REMAN if the parts still fall within specification they do not replace them. However, they are still used and are prone to an earlier failure than a brand new part. It would be cost prohibitive to replace every part with a factory original.

i.e. REMAN drive axles NEVER last as long as a new factory part because they need to grind into the original hardened surfaces. The quality of the REMAN is only as good as the facility and personel performing the job.

The transmissions from NISSAN are new. Check them out.
