Transmission Pops out of Gear
Hi,
I have been having a problem with my 1990 Maxima lately. It is a manual transmission and it pops out of first gear when the clutch is released. Actually, that was the problem at first, now if you try to use first, there is a grinding sound. I have been using second gear to start off and none of the other gears seem to have any problems at all. I fear I will need a new transmission. Please help.
Thanks,
Brian

In case anybody ever comes across this thread, a bearing had worn away in my transmission causing some shaft (I forget the name) to move freely back and forth. So when I engaged 1st gear and released the clutch, this shaft got slammed backwards into the casing and jumped out of gear. When engaged in 2nd, it still got pushed backward, just not enough to jump out of gear. I ended up chipping the metal inside the transmission and needed a total rebuild. Needless to say, my wallet wasn't happy. If anybody experiences this problem, stop driving right away and have it looked at and fixed.

probably the input shaft bearing. mine went out but i didn't experience that problem. more than like the reason it didn't pop out in second was you pull back on the shifter instead of forward so it would be trying to push it further into second. my original tranny had the input shaft bearing go out but also broke the sleeve that the input shaft was in inside the bell housing. i bought a used tranny with "100,000 miles" on it and it had the same problem so i just rebuilt it and it only cost me 58 dollars to fix. 300 including shipping for the tranny. works great now but i'm looking into some other tranny options at the moment...
