True Dual Exhaust?

I keep hearing about the use of Y-pipes here, and I was wondering if anybody has tried to fabricate a true dual exhaust, aka H or X pipe. Is it possible? There is a local exhaust shop that does custom exhausts here, and I thought I would ask you guys if it was at all possible (or even desirable) before checking it out. Thanks. The car is a 1990 SE by the way.

The spare tire well is in the way. I was going to do it since my kit came with dual exhaust cutouts. But the guy at the muffler shop said that I would have to have the trie well cut out and a piece welded on. Didn't have the money at the time to do it. Might do it in the future.

Someone claims to have a 3rd Gen true dual exhaust on the board. I can't remeber who but he posts often. He should find this and reply hopefully. I would imagine the pipe diameter has to be pretty small or there would be NO backpressure.

They are not true duals. He "Y-ed" them off above the rear axle. You can't do TRUE duals without a pair of custom made headers or manifolds since all we have is a Y-pipe. Then there'd be the issue of the oxygen sensor....

If your thinking (or just dreaming like me) of duals, then it'd be for show only.

I would assume that you could just run the O2 sensor off of of one bank...

Stealth dual

It rates next to nothing on the "show" factor, but there is a way (would require some work on the O2 sensor and perhaps two cats). I once looked at the exhaust system on a E30 BMW 325 and it was two pipes all the way from the exhaust manifold to the the muffler and it dumped out of a DTM. You'd have your dual exhaust (with one muffler).

Wouldn't it be only reading half as much gasses as it would need though?

Also, I just realized that I suppose you could just run pipes back from the existing exhaust manifolds instead of going through a Y-pipe-like structure. Unsure about how much room there is under there to run 2 parallel pipes though.

I think what matters is the % O2 of the exhaust gases (quality) rather than the quantity. I installed a header on my brother's 4-cyl 4-runner 3 years ago and the O2 sensor reads off #3 cyl exhaust runner instead at the base of the manifold as previously. I runs fine.

With a V6, I suppose that if one bank of cylinder is running rich/lean or whatever and the O2 sensor is only reading off one (the other) manifold, it could be a problem, but perhaps someone else can explain the pros/cons in detail.

That's not TRUE dual...true dual is when there is a seperate pipe for each bank of cylinders...

No we don't see true anywhere in your post (except in your sig pic for some reason). True duals is indeed the topic of the post. So why exactly would you be posting pics of your not true dual exhaust?

NA, True stands for: Normally asparated, True (like the budwiser commercials) i read the thread, sounded like it was just a dual exhaust post. if you look underneath the car at the tunnel, there is not enough room to run any worthwhile dual exhaust. I just got done putting a clutch in my buddy's 92 300Z and i got very familiar with his exhaust setup. I really don't think there's enough room underneath to run a decent sized pipe. He had true dual 2" pipes and there was barely enough room. so to answer your question about true duals, no i don't think it's possible. HOWEVER, people told me i couldn't do my setup, so feel free to give it a try! i'd like to see it done.

I'm sure Mikey knows what NA stands for, he was just making a joke there since you have TRUE in your sig

About yours being "not doable":
I remember more people saying that a TRUE dual exhuast couldn't be done easily. There were several that said a split pipe could be done but there would be no point to it
