Autolag (yes i used search)

Tonight I was in my Mom's stock 1993 GXE with 111,000 miles on it. I was catching up to my friend because I had to tell him something. I hit the gas hard around 10-20 mph and I felt a second lag before it finally caught. Is this common for and auto, or is something messed up on it?

When was the last time you had the tranny serviced. Try that, but the car is old and maxima auto trannys arent known for strength.

It has probably been forever since it has been serviced. I don't really know how to tell my Mom that she should have her car looked at without including the flooring it part. Don't really know if she would be up for that. Is there a certain problem do you think or is it almost unlimited?

Just say you noticed some weird shifting in the tranny and ask her when she had the trany fluid changed.. if it's been more then 30k miles, then she should have the tranny serviced. (fluid changed)

You probably felt the car try to accelerate in 2nd gear before it downshifted into 1st gear. That 10-15mph is basically no man's land, unless you really get on the gas the car is stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. Therefore it bogs, the reason this happens is from nissan's programming.

I have to agree with Nismo87SE on this one. If you are in the 10 - 20 mph range and nail the gas, I've found that most automagics (including my maxima) will hesitate for a second while it bogs before downshifting. I love manuals.....

That's why we have 1-2-D! Seriously, I use 1-2-D just so I can say my car is half manual half auto! j/k Isn't the lag something to do with the torque converter? I remembering hearing that the stock torque converter has that lag and if you go get a performance one then it gets rid of it, which makes shifting nearly instantaneous.

yea why the hell does it do that but at other speeds/rpms when u hit the gas itll snap like a bandit particularly in the 3-3.5k range. Its kinda nice in a way, think of a race where the 1st car takes off faster than the 2nd then the 2nd car suddenly swooooooooshes by the 1st into the lead; the VEs are that 2nd car

I was looking at the FSM for my sentra and noticed something about the auto shift schedule. From 1/8 to 7/8 throttle it won't kickdown from 2nd -> 1st over 10mph, at 8/8 throttle it won't kickdown after 28mph. Damn sux to be automagic .

Well, VG's generate the max 182lb/ft torque at 3200rpm. I've noticed that one of the good ways of getting a takeoff is cruising around in 2nd gear at about 2.8-3k rpm. Then just try to hold it at about 3k and when you are going to take off, just punch it and it will take off like a rocket! That only really works good for slower cruising around town at speeds less than 55mph (probably around 35-45mph). Mid range like that is where the VG shines. Though, getting Don's VB mod, Level10 performance tranny or Level10 TC would help out a whole lot. Its supposed to completely eliminate that lag and make it shift instantly. That would be a whole lot better for driving 1-2-D because I'm finding right now that I have to compensate for lag and shift about 200-300rpm sooner so that the tranny will shift when I want it too. I just need to get a 5spd so I can stop worrying about this crap!
