Speedometer Problem?

Hello,
I have an '89 GXE with the digital dashboard. Whenever I am not moving, the speedometer will register anywhere from 8 to 28 mph. I've never seen it hit 0 or anything below 8. This happens in park or drive, doesn't seem to matter. I have heard a little about a 'wheel speed sensor' and I wonder if maybe mine is bad, or is this a speedometer problem? I haven't taken it to the shop for this yet. Thanks.

Just another one of those irritating problems that Max's have. Local Nissan shop may be able to diagnose it as either one. Usually if it's the display, it will not show anything at all. If it's the wheel speed sensor that mounts on the tranny, it will usaully bounce from zero to the speed you're doing, but I've never heard of it bouncing in park. Might be a short in the guage assembly or a sensor wire.

Trust me! You don't want to change TO the digital guages, they are around $500 to replace last time I checked and I was told the sensor was different by a friend I used to work with. He wanted to buy an extra set of SE guages off me but they are not compatable with his digital. I don't even know if it is possible to go from Digital to SE guages, though I've heard a few people say they were going to try, that's all I ever heard from them again. If you have SE guages, why want digital anyway? Most people would kill for white faced! And if you do have the black guages, you can just go to a junk yard for about $80 and get some white SE guages that can replace the other. I've still not figured out why some buy stickers to cover the guages to make them look SE?

Yeah I would have to agree, you wouldn't want to switch TO the digital dashboard. It looks cool and all with the heads up display, but aside from my original problem, it has other problems. When you are driving, it is hard to tell exactly how fast you are going. You can get a good idea within 5 mph or so, but with regular gauges it would be exact. This thing likes to jump around a lot, even when you seem to be going just one speed. And of course my original problem does add to the odometer so it is getting many more miles on it than it actually has. Still, it only registers 79,000+ and for an '89 that's not bad.
