This will probably sound nuts but I'm looking for a muffler that will open up my air flow from the stock yet won't make that much of a noise db increase. Crazy? No, I just don't care to let people know what I have and I like things quiet.

Anyone have any advise?

Nissan's 2000+ Maxima muffler. More flow than a stock 3rd or 4th gen muffler yet very quiet. Here's a pic of mine. I have since added the chrome tip.

You can also go with a Dynomax muffler. It has a nice sporty sound.. You can hear it inside the car but on the outside it sounds almost stock. On the other hand you can go buy a Apexi Dunk series muffler and they will be able to hear you a mile away..

I thought Nissan was going to come out with a new design that would restrict pressure when at low rpm and the exhaust pipe out of the muffler would extend out to create less restriction. I've seen them in performance car shops and adds, but didn't Nissan do something similiar to this?

Nissan's maxima/i30 mufflers from 2000 year and on feature a dual chamber design. At low rpms, only one chamber flows for proper backpressure and good low end power(in the mornings when the car is idling, I only see the white exhaust coming out of one tip). When the rpms(load) rises, it opens up another chamber for maximum flow. Now these stock mufflers might not be the most free flowing mufflers on the market but IMHO it's a good combination of performance and sound. I mean these mufflers are quiet as I'm sure you have seen new maximas running around town. The Skyline was the 1st nissan to utilize this feature I think.

Can you tell a performance difference accross the band? I went from stock to a flow through and picked up a lot of full range, so it felt. I then removed it and ran straight pipe after my wreck, just a glass pack, and ran duals out the back. Doing so, I lost a lot of low end, so I went back to one straight pipe and gained a little back. Still, most of my power comes from around 3k rpm's and higher. Would you say that you benifited by utilizing this muffler? What was the cost?

It's hard to tell w/ the VE30DE. I was wondering if I would be able to feel the 2nd chamber opening but but I can't. Besides, there is already one "kick" when the VTC start advancing so that makes it even harder. Honestly I didn't feel much of anything but I needed to replace my muffler and I absolutely would not tolerate any more noise. I also had a custom cat back bolt on at the same time so I can't tell if there was a diff from just the muffler.

My description above is how the muffler works, whether or not I really gained anything is best left for a dyno run. The gains are probably nil to a few horses at best.

I also think my cattman flex section is leaking so I can't really make a hp gain comment until I get it wrapped or fixed.

I have the Dynomax (Stainless Type on mine)

It's "okay" noise wise. Its a little louder, but not too bad. Louder inside than out.

MUFF
(D)83-85 12A and 13B ...... 16432
16432............MUFFLER POWER PULSE...83-85 ALL.............$ 237.00
I know for a fact it will fit due to my own scientific reasoning. LOL! Also a 4rdGen MAx on the other BBS has done it! per my suggestion of course.
Post this question on there.....

Well what about Brullen Mufflers? How much noise to these mufflers make. I've heard that they make a nice sound but are they very loud? I wouldn't mind the tone change and a little more noise. What do you guys think.
