I have an '89 Maxima SE... black 5spd, with 367 thousand ORIGINAL miles, with no engine work! The car is still in great shape, but i have become a car and racing fanatic, and love the look of maxima's, and i am clueless on where to start on my engine mod's. The engine is so old, but i can't quite afford a new one yet. Can someone give me some ideas on some engine or interior/exterior modifications i can make for such an old and much driven car, that for the sake of fun, i would like to fix up and max out.. Thank you..
That's some impressive mileage! I think you've got the crown for the most miles around here!
you even beat out the last guy with 220k miles on his '87SE!
check out the list of mods in my sig file for "essential" mods..
Intake and suspension will help out the most..
if you just wanna go faster, add an intake ($110) and a Y pipe ($250).
if you want to handle better, also tack on a strut tower brace ($60) and sway bars ($230).
if your struts are shot and you wanna get new, better ones, I recommend Tokico (about $300/set) or Koni (about $5-600/set. I forget now).. the Konis are adjustable, and absolutely awesome from what I've heard.
If you wanna drop the car for better handling and looks, you've got a few options.. eibach springs ($220) will give you about 1.25" drop.. they're the most "sporty" from what I understand.. I've got them, and they make the car corner absolutely awesome (along with all the other suspension mods I've listed already).. I scared the crap out of a friend that drives a modded bimmer the other day.
Suspension tech springs ($180) give you about 1.5" drop, and are softer than the Eibachs.. supposedly a pretty smooth ride, but I've never ridden in a Max with them.
your other option is Intrax. they drop the lowest (1.75") and I dunno anything about the ride on them.
hope that helps, and welcome!

. I suggest reading the FAQ on https://maxima.org. As for mods I say get Suspension tech sway bars, courtesy FSTB. Then get some axxis metal master brake pads, Cold air intake, Y pipe and Jim Wolf technology ECU.

Thanks guy's for the ideas. I think i'm getting a JWT POP charger next, i can't afford CAI yet.. and then redoing the suspension and lowering it. I also need to repaint it.. it's been through quite a bit but still looks amazing. I will take a picture of my car and the odometer just for the fun of it. But it's 367+ thousand miles... with NO rebuilt engine, NO rebuilt tranny, nothing. Just oil, tires, and brakes. Except for a mild exhaust manifold leak.. fixed very quickly and easily.. but the car has been in my family ever since i was exremely young, my dad had it, my mom had it, and now i have it, and would love to preserve it.. she just bought a 97 Maxima SE, so we are Maxima fanatics. I've looked into Eibach springs.. and i am looking for sporty.. but what are the Intrax springs like, i would like to have the lower look.
RFMaxima you should chech out the ST lowering springs. that is what i have. they are really nice. and they really drive nicely. they are not harsh at all. but if you get the eibach's you are going to want to go lower two weeks later. i want to go lower. BUT i can not because i have a body kit and can not figure out how to get the jack under the maxima. but just keep on asking peoples opions and if you can drive a maxima that has Intrax lowering springs. i want to get the Intrax springs and try them out. well good luck with your choices.
