Paint Question
Hi...I have chrome fender flares on my Maxima and I really don't like them at all. I would like to take them off, but underneath the paint is somewhat rusted and starting to bubble and crack. My question is...Would a body shop be able to just fix the rust and paint just that certain spot to make it match my car, or would this be a job where they would have to paint the whole car?

they will be able to fix the rust spots and stuff
its gonna cost but its worth it
the paint is usually really hard to match cuz ur color has changed slightly over time.
when i needed my quarter panel repainted, i just painted the whole car.
good to see the chrome go
ive been thinkin about gettin my car painted black
but im more intersted in performance mods for now

Even if I was to keep the chrome flares (there is no way I would)I would still have to get it fixed, because otherwise the rust would still spread and it could get worse. I wish that the chrome flares weren't even on there to begin with...oh well. Now I have to save up for something new. There's always something you gotta have. How much do you think it would cost to do something like that?

if you want a cheap fix you can go to "pep boys" or "auto zone" if you have those and they sale the cans of spray with a booklet to look up the right color for your car, and just paint over the spots needed, thats what i did with my bumpers.

but if your a real perfectionist, its not gonna be exactly the same color
so make ur call, it will be a lot cheaper though
they sell kits that let you take care of rust spots too

I could easily get the same paint 'cause I know the Nissan paint code. I had some paint made last summer at a shop and my dad and I painted my spoiler. Is the rust that easy to get out? I saw that rust remover stuff at auto zone today. The only thing I would be worried about if my dad or I did it, is being able to just paint that particular spot well. You know what I mean?

the rust is a bit of work to remove, and needs to be removed completely, or more problems can result
if its really deep in, that could be even more of a problem
i know they have the same paint, but urs will be faded cuz of sun and other elements. it wont be far off though

I think it's best to take off the flares and see how bad the rust really is. Hopefully nothing will be rusted through or deeply corroded (which will need Bondo). As mentioned make sure you kill the rust entirely with rust remover/converter or sanding and use a good primer. I don't think bodyshops will just paint the wheel arches - they'll probably insist on the whole quarterpanel (doesn't hurt to ask tho). If you're confident you could always TRY it at home doing a spot repaint. If you're not happy with it then you could resort to the bodyshop.

a body shop
will fix the fender lips, if the rust is eating away the metal go to the shop and get it fixed right, they will paint waht they need to paint and fade the paint so it matches the paint thats faded over the 10+ years

If your front fenders are the ones with the rust, go to a junk yard and get some used fenders. It will probably run you about $40 each. I think this is better than having to pay to have rust removed and then to paint, that could add up to alot. Also, the rust could come back to haunt you again.
The reason you have that rust is probably because of the water trapped between your fender flares and your fenders.
Hopefully, if you go to the junk yard, perhaps you can get the fenders in your color, if not, get em painted with the rest of the car.

I'm going to try to take the flares off tommorrow to see how bad the rust really is. If it doesnt look too bad, I'll try to fix it myself. Does rust remover work well, if it's just surface rust? But..I think that the paint is cracking too, so that means it would need some sanding too. I might check around at the junk yards, but I think it would be more costly to get new fenders.

I had stainless steel fender flares on another car, looked like chrome but was really stainless, and I painted them to match the car cause I didn't like the look of them. I thought it looked really good. Maybe you could try that?? Kinda gave it a wide body look...
