How to tell if freon needs recharging?

I used A/C recently, but noticed that it would get really cool, then gradually warm up to barely cooler than outside air in about five minutes. Then the air coming out would be really cool again and warm up, etc. Everything sounded fine, car was running good through this cycle of cool/warm air. Just wondering if anyone knows what the problem might be?

Could be low freon. Could be a failing compressor. Has the car cooled well in the past?

thanks for

reminding me, I have to get mine filled, its like 80 degrees today

I know that the same type of thing was happening in my moms car and she just got the freon recharged and it worked great. the newer stuff they use doesnt seen a powerfull as the original stuff, probably because of those damn tree huggers lol

If you've never had it refilled before, then it's probably tiem to have the system gone over and recharged.

they will leak down with time to some extent, but a sudden loss in cooling (like worked great last week, doesn't today) usually means something more drastic..

it sounds like yours just needs recharged, but you have to take it to a shop anyway.. many of them now will put a UV sensitive dye in it and will recharge the system, then check it for leaks as part of the service.

they stopped selling R12 since it burns the ozone layer.
now they are selling R134-a freon..safer for the environment.
people getting high...well they see kids getting high off spray paint..but it's still sold.

Awesome, thanks for all the replies. Sounds like it's time to get it recharged.

Thorzdad - Don't know if it has, I bought this car used in December from a dealer.
