For VG 5spd owners
Well,
Kaleb and I now both have VG 5spd's. We also have ALMOST indentical mods. CAI, y-pipe, UDP, timing advance, Eibach, tokicos, sway bars, tower bars etc.
I have one thing he doesn't, the GReddy SP catback, and he has one thing I don't...the ECU upgrade.
Well, to make a long story short. From the line, from a roll, from 15 mph, from 20 mph, and from 30 mph, he smoked me every time. Wasn't even close (there is a video).
At first we couldn't figure it out. Did I jsut suck that bad as a driver? Was my car just slow?
Then we discussed where we were shifting at. I was shifting right before the rev limiter, and he was shifting at around 7K.
So we ran another race where we both shifted at 5500~5600, and it was dead even. I mean so even that there wasn't even half a car length change in position the whole time, and we went to about 80 mph.
I told him that we should sell the video to Jim Wolf as a commercial and proof of what his product actually does.
Maybe I'll get one, and we can make make another commercial for GReddy.

Able to, yes. safe... depends on what kinda ***** you've got. anything over 7 is the danger zone.. the valve springs can't keep up past about 7k, and the engine will blow itself to pieces.
I would be concerned on an aging engine too, as the valve springs soften and shrink over time.. they may not be able to take 7k at all, depending on the condition of your engine.

The person in question not only could fix it himself if it did blow up, but he has an extra engine too.

Yes, I know that. he used to keep it in his living room. I spent a few nights on his couch sleeping next to the new engine. now if only that goober would get it finished!

Well the heads suck enough that it doesn't accelerate "well" in that range, but it doesn't strain as much as it does without the ECU (timing control fixes that I'm sure). However, the real benefit of shifting higher in our cars (at least the SOHC VG) is where your engine's RPM is at for the next shift. A VQ engine, on the other hand, is so efficient at high RPM that it continues to make decent power past redline (especially with the variable intake manifold).
Randy: Don't worry, the engine was clean and lightly coated with very new engine oil (just the bottom end as well)

but if your running each gear out to 7000 rpm then the next shift will be at 4500 or so, which is not the best area for the vg,
also, do you know what degree the ecu sets the timing to during these 7000 stints on the vg?
