Drivers Side Axle Installation

When I replaced my transmission I followed the instructions in the Haynes manual. It says to bang the axle in with a rubber mallet, or hammer. I did, and although it seemed forceful at the time, I didn't think about it. Anyways I've been having this problem, and am going to change the axles and see if that fixes it. I was wondering if there is any other way to install this axle, without pounding on it, and if pounding on it could damage the joints. Thanks everyone!
