VTC "O" rings and special thanks to Eric93SE
VTC "O" rings and special thanks to Eric93SE
A couple of weeks ago my car developed the "tick" and it did it for a couple days pretty much non stop so I grounded them and just figured I would rebuild or replace them. I was reading the other day where Eric93SE posted about the o rings so I decided to take a look and see what I would find.
The first thing I noticed was that one of the connectors were burnt...thats right burnt I guess the wires shorted some how. the next thing I noticed is that the o rings were cone shaped instead of round like they were supposed to be.
I took the solinoids out and cleaned the connections real good and flipped the o rings upside down (where the cone part was facing up)
I cut the wire connections (I didn't want too but the one was so burnt I didn't want the wires touching again.) and took some small "-" speaker terminals (perfect size) and soldered them on the wires and put tape (getting heat shrink but was out of that size I needed)
Of course I made sure I put the right wire where it goes by looking at the connector and marking on the solinoid for future reference.
I put it all together last night and unhooked the battery.
This morning I hooked the battery back up and started the car and I didn't have one single tick and the car idle was back to perfect (it had like a little surge before). I just hope I caught the problem before I did too much damage to the spring.
anyway Thanks so much Eric for giving me the idea to check the o rings instead of just saying "oh well I will just rebuild later"
I just wish I would have sent you an email fast enough to be able to get the o rings you had left...I will just have to order my own.
Thanks again and if anybody is having this problem I would take a look because you never know...my guess is that my instance is probably rare but hey whats it cost to look.

Hey, thats great!
Good job. I'm glad things worked out for you. I'll get the info for the proper o-ring so people can order them if they want.
edit:
The company I ordered mine from is MSC Industrial Suppy Corp. 1-800-645-7270 (www.mscdirect.com), They Have an awsome catalog thats free, The item number is 31958937 and they are Metric Viton o-rings and they measure 2mm wide 10mm ID and 14MM OD. The package contains 25, and the price is $10.44 plus ship.
Since there is more than enough in a package, may be others can distribute them for free as I did.

a few quick questions.....did you unground ya VTC's, read that you put it all together, but wasn't sure if that included ungrounding ya VTC's.......my other question is, what solenoids and connectors are you guys talking about, i remember reading the thread on the o-rings, and i tried to get some from eric, but i guess all were gone!!!
Disreguard the second question...I can look it up (just to lazy to delete what i wrote), but i would like to know the answer to the first question!!

well yeah it would kinda defeat the purpose if I didn't unground the vtcs
(Just being a smart a**) but seriously when I cleaned the connectors (on the solenoid it self) and all I ungrounded them and soldered on new connections. I will see about getting the o rings monday or tue and will let everyone know what I do.
