opinions on 3rd gen vs 5th gen

A friend of my moms left his black 2001 SE auto at my house for the week and today i cleaned that and mine and "tried" out the 2001...

holy hell does that VQ rock, i didnt take it out for a "real" drive being its not my car but while around the block i got the tires to chirp a bit with only like half throttle...id be lucky if i can get mine to chirp at full throttle i hate the VE off the line (especially mine being an auto) Those of you with VE 5spds, how much better are your launches of the line? (..never driven a VE-5)

turning the tables i must say even though the black 5th gen SEs are pretty sharp/elegant lookin, 3rd gen SEs hands down own the styling category...the 5th gen looks more "bubbly" and "puffy" in styling vs the relaxed slim flow of the 3rds. Moving inside, the 2k1 i love the dash design, overall very slim styling but "clumpy" in certain spots elsewhere. The 2k1 leather seats feel more firm, my 92 leather seats look simpler and are less "involved" as far as the stitched seams go.

Audio - the Bose system in the 2k1 is fair-good, nice intention with the sub in the rear deck but you cant hear it unless youre in the back seat...front tweeters are pretty decent and the remaining 4 speakers are ok. I guess having a custom stereo in my 92, ive grown to it...wow scary i remember those days where the only adjustments were Bass and Treble

[Newbie Mode] god i wish i can get a VQ in my 3rd gen [/Newbie Mode]

They are definitely totally different cars. If Nissan could make a brand new version of the 3rd gen with a completely redisgned interior, and the 3.5L with the 6 speed tranmission it'd be awesome. Freshen up the 3rd gen lines, but give it the same general shape instead of that bubbly design. The 3rd gen had the best styling hands down. It was way ahead of it's time. We like our 3rd gens so much just because of the styling and performance and they're 8 plus year old cars, just imagine if they were brand new.

awhoo whoo, double post..
A relitive of mine just bought a 2k2 auto se, and as much as i love the 3rd gen design, i would drop it in a sec to have the performance the 2k2 had, bubble shapes and all.

yes i totally agree. i almost think the 5 gens are looking like new impallas when they have body kits on em. hell i'm thinking about doing very minor engine work to my 89'(exhaust, catback, cai,new y pipes, mainly stuff dealing w/air) lowering it, 17 or 18 in chrome rims, bmw hd lights w/clear corners, new paint, joshua tree dash, maybe* re-leather in two tone drk blue and black, audio sys, and detail the hell out of the carpets. by the time all this is finished i'll be able to afford a max with the VQ-K engine. it'll be maxima bliss. my 89' when i want to be stylin'/somewhat sporty, whatever year 2k2+ when i want to hall some *****. hopefully the 2k2+ will be mine in 2-3 yrs, assuming i don't get married or have some kids by then.

My father in-law has a 2001 SE Auto. That thing is such a boat!

Once you drive a 5-speed VE, you will never look back.

Finally drove (briefly) a 2K2 SE 6-speed. Gorgeous car. Bottom line: Have a 3rd gen. Want a 5th gen.

Hmm, some like someone with a sick amount of money and time needs to orchestrate: 3.5 liter VQ in a 3rdGen...

(yeah, I know. It wouldn't work. But imagine...)

One thing I love about the 3rd gen is the interior design. Such a nice layout. Not too overdone, just nice and plain. Thank God Nissan didnt try to round everything out and make it look too futuristic. Still looks great for a 10 yr old interior.

Look around at some other 10 yr old cars and you'll gag at the interior design. Eek especially GM cars...

If you had, you wouldn't need to ask.

Oh yes their is a big difference in the VE auto vs the 5spd, 5spds are quick of the line all the way up. I think this motor was the worst engine in an automatic in the Max, very slow of the line even VG's have better low end and can churp the tires. The VQ's are in anothe rleague vs the VE auto 95 on up to 02 with the 3.5.

my bro has a 2k and a 93 (both SE, 5sp). Yeah, the 2k's a beast. The 93 feels like s slug (at least this one does). The 93 is definitely a more fun car to drive cuz you can toss it around (irs?) and the higher rpm's are easier to manage (such as doing canyon/mountain runs). The 2k's a luxu/sport/sedan. Both cars have leather and cold package. Both have BOSE (the 93's bose has been replaced though). If I could afford one, I'd get a 5th gen 5sp.
