so I was planning on doing something else.
Sand down my rims and prime it, then spray paint it with chrome or something to make it more bling.
The reason why I want to do this as well is because it's corroding.
Anyone have any thoughts before I do this?

In my opinion, if by bling you mean ghetto, then yes they would look more bling, but there are other options. I didnt have the money to drop on new 17"s and tires either, so i went on ebay and bought the 2001 16"SE 5 spoke rims for like $100 a piece and Kuhmo tires (awesome deal for what you get) for $77 each. So I only spent like $900 compared to a couple thousand and got a real nice look for the car. And you don't need to buy super performance tires either if you don't want. If you cant come up with that much dough I'd say to save up and leave the stock ones alone, just because if I saw crome painted stock rims id assume your heating vents and door handles were painted to match the car, all of which i think screams ricer, but hey, what do i know right?

hee hee. I do like the stock look, dont get me wrong it's just corroding and I want to fix it up. I would really like to get rims but I just simply can't afford to dish out that kind of cash - still a student
.P.S. spoke rims = not my preference

if you are going to paint them at least paint them silver (like the earlier models) because I dont know if you ever used chrome paint but that stuff does not look like actual chrome. It may shine a little but it will not look like real chrome I promise.Originally posted by Aphrodisiac

to get the rims chromed would cost more than you want to spend because you could put a little more money with it and get new ones.

and I "could" always wet sand it paint it, repeat, to make it mirrory and shiny. so it's all good.
PS anyone have any advice about protecting my paint job?

Im assuming u mean the paintjob on the rims right? well all i know is that u can wax them just like u wax ur car, its the same idea. and of course try to avoid the snow cause of the sand or salt on the road, but im sure u already knew that!

If you have a white car paint the rims white. That's what I did and it came out very nice, considering it cost me $20 to do.

For your own info
I just finish to clean my original rim.
What you need to do :
First step you used paint stripper to remove the clear coat.(Dont touch the gray in the groove just the flat surface)
Second step You remouved one front wheel and you used your car has a late So the next step you used different grip of sand paper has 180-320-400 and finish with a 1000 .
If you want a chrome finish you need compound and a buffer and another 1 hrs on each rims????
Next you clean every thing with a paint cleaner and you are ready for a clear coat .Now you just need some body who could apply a clear coat and this just cost you 8 hrs to 12 hrs of your own time and sand paper
After clear coat you just need to sand with a 2000 grip sandpaper and wax them.
Pictures will come next week because i just order new Yokohama Tires.
Good lock to all of you

I sprayed mine w/ easyoff oven cleaner to get the 10 yrs of brakedust off, washed, sanded like hell, primed, sanded, painted, cleared. All that work and 6 mos later they look like ***. The heat from braking (fronts only) made the clear turn yellow and started to peel and all that. If you do it use High temp paint or epoxy, or trade yours in for refinished wheels at 130$$ each. You decide. I learned my lesson. Not as easy as I initially thought, nad I went for high quality primer and paint.

Aphrodisiac: if your rims are not too corroded you can sand them down and polish them up by hand, that'll look more 'bling' than mexi-chrome.Originally posted by N34JZ

YOu know I never stopped to think maybe, JUST MAYbe there is a clear coat
hah. THats probably what's making me think it's starting to corrode, because I fail to see orange.BUt anywhooo
I think I'm going to try MaxRT's (or a similiar) way. Because not only is it corroding/clear coating comming off, but there is alot of dirt thats in the bumpy portion of the rims.
So I figure, sand it, clean it, sand it again, prime it, paint it (if nesssary) then add that clear coat
BTW MAxRT can you give me some more info on that clear coating business?
