refrigerant question

Is the refrigerant used on 94 GXE the new kind or old one? Is there any way to add refrigerant by myself? Where to find the instructions?

Thank you

If you don't already have a hose for the r-134 cans then go to auto zone and buy the package that has the hose and the pressure meter. This way you'll do it properly. The cans of freon are usually about $5-$7.

R134a is the freon for your car.

Dan, Are you sure it is R-134a? One of the repair shop told me it is the old kind of refrigerant.

How should I check it out?

I was able to see a tag on mine where the fitting goes into the condensor (radiator for the ac system that is in front of your normal radiator). Look below the front bumper towards the right side and you will see a fitting going into the condensor. I happened to see a R134 tag on mine this past weekend. Good luck.

I don't reply to stuff often, but here's MY $0.02 worth (since I just did this yesterday)

I don't know about everyone else, but MY Max had the old-style refrigerant (R12). I had to purchase a retrofit kit to adapt the fittings to accept R-134a. I found the kit at my local Target, but they also sold the kit at Wal-Mart and Kmart as well. Roughly it's around $35-$40.

Like DanNY said, you need to make sure you get the proper amount of refrigerant in there. I'm sure you can also get a gauge wherever you buy the kit at.

Basically, all the kit consisted of was the fittings and 3 cans of R-134a refrigerant. And it took me all of 30 minutes to do it and now I've got icicles on my vents!

Good luck wit ya!!

Fittings

The fittings for R-12 and R-134a are very distinctly different. The R-134 have snap ring connections, the R-12 hoses screw to the charge fittings.

How many cans from the kit did it take to fully charge your system? And how well has it worked compared to your older r12? I might be trying this out as well.

hey guys,
funny thing, i was just asking a friend about this. I have the R-134a style, he thought that i may have the R-12. anyway, i was wondering, because my AC does not work at all whats so ever, no draw on the engine... do i just need to charge the system or is there something wrong? he said they're may be a leak? if any of you guys have experience with this, please let me know, an all black max with black leather is not fun to drive in 90* weather in the school parking lot
thanks for the help
