Greetings,

After 140K miles, the flexi-section on my front exhaust y-pipe/f-pipe
has come apart on my 1993 GXE SOHC. I don't really need an expensive
"performance" y-pipe, just something similar to stock. After getting
a quote of $305 from the local Nissan dealer to get an idea of what
the most expensive replacement cost should be, I checked with NOPI
and The Parts Bin and they both have listings for a "Bosal header
pipe" for around $124-$127. Has anyone purchased one of these? I
am wondering about the quality of the pipe, particularly the flexi-
section.

I will need to replace the hanger bracket that goes between
the front of the catalytic converter and the y-pipe, but I can't
find a listing for it anywhere (and the local dealer wants $28 for
it)...anyone know where I can get a cheap one?

And while I am asking, anyone know the specifics on the nuts and
bolts that go into the cat and y-pipe connections? Mine are very
rusty and I doubt they will survive my attempt at removing them,
so I will probably end up replacing them as well.

Any info would be appreciated.

I don't know about the "header pipe", but I promise you a Warpspeed performance Y-pipe will be cheaper than a stock replacemetn unless you get a used one, and will surprise you had how much more pull it has. As fo rthe hanger, I just replaced mine..don't know the part # off hand, but it was $17 from brown and Brown Nissan, Tempe Arizona. I found then in the back of Road and Track...very good prices.

I'm not really that concerned about increasing the performance,
just want to be able to drive the car and not go deaf...well,
my wife actually drives the car more than me and since she is
seven months pregnant, I'd like to take it easy on her and the
baby and my wallet.

Anyway, $129 (for the pipe at thepartsbin.com is a lot cheaper
than the $305 the dealer wants for the front exhaust tube assembly
and Warpspeed wants $195 + shipping for their "budget pipe". I was
just curious if anyone had bought a "stock" aftermarket replacement
like the Bosal and could give me an idea of what the quality is like.

With so many guys in this forum replacing their stock pipes with
"performance" y-pipes, I'm surprised I don't see lots of used
stock y-pipes in the "For Sale" section...

Best I can do is this:

Not sure if that url will work or not, but you can go to
The Parts Bin , click on the "Order Nissan Maxima Parts",enter "1993",
hit enter, choose "Maxima 3.0 SOHC" and it will bring up a parts
tree. Click on "Exhaust", then "header pipe"...

There is no picture for this part on the site. I attempted to
do a search and find more information concerning this part but
came up empty. If you are familiar with the exhaust system,
there is only one thing that can be referred to as a "header
pipe". Heck, everyone calls them either "y-pipes" or "f-pipes"
and the factory service manual calls them a "front exhaust tube
assembly", so I guess it's okay for these folks to call it a
"front header". There aren't that many pieces to the system,
and the only thing in front (besides the cat) is the y-pipe and
this does not sound like a manifold otherwise it would say "right"
and "left" and that you need two.

But as usual, I could be giving them too much credit...

Update:

The y-pipe arrived on Friday and it's made just like the original
pipe for the most part. This isn't a "performance" pipe since it
has the same pipe layout as the stock y-pipe, but I was interested
in just replacing my old leaky pipe anyway. Cost was $127 (free
UPS ground shipping and no tax) from www.thepartsbin.com which was
about $200 cheaper than the local Nissan dealership. Manufacturer
is Bosal/Brospeed and it was made in Canada.

The nuts on the exhaust connections were 14mm with an inner opening
of 10mm with a 1.25 pitch.

Now, if I could only get a deal on the hanger that bolts to the
front of the catalytic converter, I'd be all set...$28+tax from
Nissan just seems like a lot of money for a bracket...

Try Jagworks . I saw the Bosal exhaust hanger on there for $2.38

Oh yeah, and I think the header pipe would have been a little cheaper there too... Sorry for the late tip.
