I've been looking through the threads for a while now
and it seems to me that everyone is having some type of problem with their max. If this car is so reliabale, why is everyone having tranny problems or serious problems like this.

I'm no talking small brake problems, it seems to be tranny rebuilds or loss of power, etc...

I just bought a 1993 SE 5speed and I'm now always doubting my purchase lately. The car is fine, just a couple things to be done. But I feel like it could blow up tomorrow when turning the key.

i think your gonna be ok. take into consideration most of the people that are having that serious of problems with their max are at around 150,000 miles on it. most cars never see this on the odometer. also, i have close to 80,000miles on mine and ive had absolutely no problem what-so-ever with it.

What are you talking about... these cars do last forever, my car is living proof. As everyone knows in the next couple days i'm going to cross 369 thousand miles, yes THOUSAND miles, with NO engine rebuilds or tranny rebuilds. Just brakes, oil, and a minor exhaust leak, and i've already ordered a new Y-pipe to fix that and give me more power. And i race the heck out of my car.. i know i shouldn't, but with my intake and that car's speed. I love it, so maxima's ARE reliable cars. The best if you ask me.

Also keep in mind that most of the people on this board drive their cars HARD. when you treat any car like a race car, you should expect it to wear out quickly.
My uncle has a 93 SE auto with almost 180,000 miles on it, much of it in city traffic.
guess what maintenance he's done?
change Oil, tranny fluid, flush brake lines, clean fuel injectors once/year, antifreeze, plugs, tires, brakes, struts at 120k
yup, that's about it. nothing out of the ordinary, even for a maxima.
the car runs like it's got 18,000 miles on it, not 180,000.

the Bose is still working, the tranny runs smoother than silk, the clock hasn't died, his windows have never messed up, nor his door locks.
he does not complain of any loss in power, nor does he whine that it's not fast enough.

My max has 147 thousand on it. Tranny is still in good shape, no rebuilds comming anytime soon.

Only things i've done are tires, waterpump, tune-ups, axles (was my CV boots but i just did the axles), and welded my stock Y-pipe shut. My window regulator broke and i have the dimming clock light. I put a custom metal clip in to stop the window from sliding down so i don't have to worry about the window. Keeps people from f****ing with it.

These are really good cars. Sorry that you doubt yours.

Reliability

To be perfectly blunt, this is the most reliable car I have ever owned. "Maxine" now has 81,000 on the odometer and she still runs just as good as the day I bought her. In fact, I am going to do a comparison between Maxine and my former vehicle, a 1988 Caprice Classic with a 305.

Maxima:
60,000 mile maintenance & recent oil change
Brakes
Flex Tube (Soon to be replaced when I get my WarpSpeed Exhaust)

Caprice:
Alternator (Rebuilt Twice, the first time during the first 2 months of ownership)
Replaced Engine Fan
A/C Compressor (Still had R12)
Radiator
Brakes
Front End
2 Water Pumps
Trans slippage in reverse
Emissions Controls
Fried Electrical wiring (Underhood)
Engine

I admit that I drove my Caprice hard (but it gave me understanding why the cops loved them). Maxine does not get driven hard and I have no intentions of doing so.

Don't doubt your purchase. I have had a lot of work done to my car. I have had both 1st and 2nd gear replaced in my manual tranny, I've had the starter replaced, and I've had the struts replaced and am about to get a new strut mount for the right front strut. There's been other little mishaps such ast the VTC, and a sticky thermostat, but all the extensive and expensive work that I've had done to this car has either been my fault or the fact that the dealers I have taken my car to are incompitent. My '93 SE manual with 111,000 on it, with all these repairs, still runs like it has 20,000 miles on it. My car WILL make it to 200,000 miles.

Problems with the Max in 42K of driving in the past year and a half (has 110K on it now)--Drivers window regulator, clock (easy DIY), front ball joint due to worn struts and wiper linkage plus routine items--brakes, struts, fluid changes. My baby still runs excellent and I don't doubt it will go 200K+. This car rocks--not only in comparison to what I've had, but I think in terms of any 9 year old car.

IF its been maintained, dont worry.
I happened to get one that the previous owner didnt know how to change any fluids...well...mine still runs, but i have lifters going bad and i had to replace the trannie(this is after 175k though).
1/2" of sludge on the lifter assemblies on any motor will mess it up though

What someone told me that used to work for nissan dealership said that the older 2nd generation maximas are a lot tougher. Which i kinda believe...my grandfather has a 85 Maxima wagon(first year of the v6 motor) and it has 240k+ on it, and hasnt had an oil change since before 200k (he dosnt believe in maintenence) yeah..it smokes..and it dosnt run quite right...but it dosnt knock or tick the least bit Its proly gona retire(to a junkyard) at 250 tho.

My Max

I love my Max to death, but I am convinced I have really bad "carma" (Sorry, old habit).

After I bought the car I had an audio system put in, the audio tech got drunk and took my car down to a casino and put 3200 dollars worth of body damage on the car. 3 months later and some litigation, I finally get the body damage repaired. Yay!

Now I've had my car back since Monday, and on Tuesday (yesterday) I picked up a dry wall screw in the front tire, few seconds later I'm on the rim. Get out of the car to replace the tire, find out that the wrench is not with the jack for some reason. Call my buddy, he comes with a wrench. We start jackin the car up then the jack breaks. Yay.... Call AAA, wait 2.5 hours, AAA comes, jacks up my car and puts the spare on.

At this point I'm very cold and glad to be going home... almost home... almost home... alm.. BANG! Ahhhh crap. Spare is flat (AAA guy told me I didn't need to check the PSI, cuz spares aren't meant to be filled up, I believed him)... Cursing ensues. With a lot of work, we manage to get the spare workable... trudge home at about 5mph.

So... as you can see, my Maxima has been good in the mechanical sense, it just hasn't been nice to me. I think it misses it's old owner.
