Re: timeing belt

did you remember to put the timing plate back on before you reinstalled the crank pulleys. if not, the belt is more than likely running off the front side of the sprockets and rubbing on the shroud. Also, if the deflection is less than a half inch, the belt will make a whinning noise. My thoughts are that it is a little better tight than loose. the belt will stretch over time and the noise should diminish. a loose belt will make a slapping noise as the tension is removed during accelleration.

Did the noise go away after you adjusted the tensioner?

Yes after i adjusted it the noise went away. It was way to tight and only had around a quarter inch deflection. do you think that did any damage to the new belt? it didnt really look work but what do i know.

tighter is better and according to one ASE nissan tech, the whinning noise is no big deal. just means the belt is a tad tight.

I read on this site that it is bad to overtighten for possible risk of breaking the crankshaft.
