how to make my auto tranny last

I bought a 91 Max auto with 106K on it. It wasn't driven by a little old lady, but close. She was a bank employee in her late 50's. She replaced the Max with a Lexus and was telling me how much she regretted it when we were transferring the deed.

Anyway, I get the impression from previous threads that the auto trannys on these models are notoriously lousy. Any tips to making them last? I bought the car for $4500 and don't want to put another $2000 in it any time soon.

thanks!

i like to hear this too..but i know burning tires messes up your tranny, and tranny cooler actually helps the tranny, i already got the tranny cooler. i don't know about anything else...

the add a tranny cooler.

that should help.

Also change the tranny fluid at shorter intervals than what is stated in the user manual, especially if it is not synthetic. It is not very expensive and keeps the fluid fresh and unburned.

I did a search of the site and couldn't find any info on what a tranny cooler is. Could somebody point me in the right direction? How expensive is this?

thanks

here's just one of the many companies out there that sell tranny coolers. it's basically a radiator for you tranny. it just keeps the oil in the tranny colder. http://www.alamomotorsports.com/prod...nnycooler.html

How to make an auto tranny last....

First off my 1994 nissan maxima GXE has 123,000 miles on it and I put this stuff called "SLICK 50" the greatest s h i t ever. I have noticed restored horse power, no tranny slip during shifts, etc... You can buy it at autozone, kmart, walmare, etc.... Its a thickass liquid you pour into your tranny.

change the fluid replace the filter if possible. Don't down shift and floor it and then put it into gear.

if you are short on cash

you can go to a pick and pull type of junk yard and look in the imports and you will find all the tranny coolers you want for 15 bucks a pop.

lately i've noticed that after driving my car hard (quick stop n go's) my car tends to jump when i go
example at a stop light i'll stop then whe i hit the gas to go, there will be a slight hesitation then it would kinda jump then go....whats the deal? think that slick 50 stuff would help for this or isit sonething else.
i asked a friend of mine and he said it may be the linkage
any help peoples?
my baby is in distress!

just be glad you don't have my auto tranny which since yesterday has no reverse or fourth gear, it also randomly goes into nuetral and is very stubborn when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Driving takes planning when u have no reverse.

Dude, thats not very funny at all. Mine did that about six months ago and finally I had nothing but 1st and 3rd gear.....ended up costing me 1500 bucks to have the tranny and torque converter rebuilt. Works like a charm now. The 2nd to 3rd shift is like nothing i've ever felt in any auto tranny anywhere. 1st to second still leave something to be desired....but these are the perils of the 3rd gen tranny. Alas...I long for a VB mod...
