ticking at startup and while driving

when i start my car i hear a kinda loud ticking from the engine for a few seconds and then it stops. when im driving i hear a weird ticking coming from the wheels, its a different ticking than when i start the car because it doesnt tick faster when i rev it up higher. i checked the FAQ and search but it says it can only be a vtc problem on the VEs. so whats my problem?

Tick

Might seem like I'm joking, but check your tires to see if you ran over a nail.
The start up noise is very possibly the VTC prob. Tappets/valves could be noisy too. But the other noise may be something as simple as a nail, if I read your post correctly.

No expert - just trying to pitch in...

I have the same problem on my 90 GXE, the ticking I hear is not the same problem as the SE, and the sound coming from the wheel scares me. Im afraid something expensive has gone south.

Check the CV boots for cracks - sounds like one of the CV joints may be on the way out.

could be yur axle or wheel bearing. try to do a 360* forward and backward to see if the noise gets louder or more constant. jack up your car and spin the wheel that u hear the noise, shake the tire l/r and up/down to see if there is any play. maybe its just a pebbles stuck between tire thread.

The ticking at start up could also be due to oil. I know it's been discussed in length before. The problem is oil filters that suck (IE - Fram) and don't have anti-drainback valves or ones that don't work well. When you shut the car off the oil drains back down of course! Then when you turn the car on the lifters click since the oil needs to feed through. Check and see what kind of oil filter you have.

One thing that I have done that may have helped inadvertently(with the VTC issue) over the years is that I let my car warm up for at least 5 minutes before driving. I also have used synthetic oil since 10,000 miles. I now have over 150,000 miles with no VTC issues.

This issue ONLY applies to the VE30DE engine on the 92 to 94 SE models, and is regarding the "ticking" sound reported by many owners.
I have a 1990 GXE and it ticks.

NHTSA Bulletins

Hey Jeff. I was just perusing some of the TSB's, but I'm not sure how to decipher the codes at the end of the problem description. For example, I was just reading a section (relating to my 91 SE) regarding the broken manifold studs, and at the end of the description it says *TW. Others end in "DG". Tried to find a legend on the site, but couldn't find one. Can you shed some light on it?

You're correct. Only the 92-94 SE's have the VG30de engine, that uses VTC's. Next time you do or get an oil change, don't use a fram filter. I don't remember the kind you can use that work better. Personally, I use Mobil 1 synthetic and a Mobil 1 oil filter and the lifters don't click like they used to on startup.

I remember someone mentioning using a smaller oil filter??? Maybe this was for another fix, but I believe they said to use a honda oil filter or something.
