Is it possible to change the tranny fluid on an automatic if so how cnait be done....

 

yeah...the tranny has a drain plug like the oil does. Just pull the plug...3/8" drive...and drain it. Fill w/ new ATF through the dip stick..about 2 quarts. Start car, go through the gears, leave it running, cleck fluid level, add if you need to. Don't forget to put the plug back in.

 

Is there not a filter in these transmissions that need to be changed when changing the fluid?

its a non-serviceable filter it is only changed when they rebuild the tranny .also if you change your own fluid you are only changeing about 20% of the fluid thats in there you need to go jiffy lube or some place that changes all of the fliud by running like 15 qts through it till all the fluids been changed this is the way to do this if the fliud is really dirty.

 

its a wire screen filter. No need for replacement.

 

Yes, as previouly mentioned there is a drain bolt on the transmission pan, it is 19mm if I rember correctly. I really let my tranny drain for about 30 minutes and got out 5 qts and 2 ounces of old fluid. It will take me 4 drains and replacement to achieve a 93% ratio of new fluid to old. There is another way to change fluid and that is to disconnect hose at transmission oil cooler and pump out 2 quarts of old tranny fluid. Install 2 quarts of ATF and repeat process until new tranny fluid comes out. Your old fluid will dark and the new is red so it is easy to tell when you have replaced all tranny fluid. This method will take about 10 qts of ATF. You can also drop tranny oil pan and clean it and the magnets on it with something like TBF cleaner. I started with the 4 step drain and refill procedure but it takes 20 qts., so I am going to switch to the procedure where you disconnect the line going to the tranny oil cooler. I will save $25 in ATF fluid. I am converting to AMSOIL Synthetic ATF, so my ATF is costing around $5.00 quart. If you start with the taking the tranny oil cooler line disconnect procedure you will save yorself about 10 quarts or $50 worth of ATF. I can't say enough about the improvement just swapping out 5 quarts of ATF made in the sound of and operation of the tranny. If someone tried to tell me what the difference would be I would not have believed tham. Just awesome!! Oh yeah, will laying under car watching tranny drain I got bored and counted number of bolts holding tanny pan on, There are 23! To the best of my knowledge there is not a filter in tranny say as in engine oil filter but more like a sump screen so I am not going to mess with it!

Alright guys..I've got 46k miles on my automagic and it's about time I changed the tranny fluid. Since I have now idea how to do the disconnect tranny return line thing and risk burning up my tranny - I will drain and fill even if it doesn't replace it all! Now all I need to know is how much dang fluid to pour in there. Too little..you fry your tranny/too much you screw the seals (bah!). Anyhow while i'm on the subject of tranmissions, at 46k it has started to shift alittle hard from 1st to 2nd (gets better as it warms up) and from 2nd to 3rd it doesn't shift quite smooth. It'll let off the gas which you can feel and then it'll shift into 3rd like maybe around 1/3 of a second later...anybody else getting this?

Put in the same amount that was drained, the check the level with the dip stick.

 

mykizism, please don't tell me that's our autop tranny... that thing is HUGE. lol, i almost have a write up for the manual. (i know you're kidding but just thought i'd say though)
