Budget O2 sensor??

Budget O2 sensor??
Just curious, but can the Maxima O2 sensor be replaced by one from another car?
Example: I have driven e30 BMWs for about 10 years now. Sensors for these cars are about $110 - $150. I can buy a four wire sensor for an '88 Mustang 4 cylinder or a three wire for a '90 Mustang 5.0 (depending on which model e30 I'm working on). The connectors are not compatible, so I use my old connector with the new sensor (Cut the wires and re-solder my old connector to the new sensor leads), and voila!!! I'm in for ~$30.
Thanks,
Jason

They work on this principle. You get a "universal" sonsor and instructions for splicing it into your OEM harness.
