Overdrive

Is Overdrive in the automagic like an extra gear? I know it saves gas when in use, but what is its real purpose? Does it only apply to 4th gear?

over drive is 4th gear. when you turn off the OD, it locks the torque convertor to 3rd gear and wont shift into 4th
