My tachometer broke and I just bought a used gauge cluster from someone on the board. Is there a way to change the odometer to match mine? I figure that there must be a way since a dealership would be able to if they replaced my cluster- so why wouldn't I be able to?

I'm sure there are a lot of people wondering this (anyone who has had to/chose to replace his cluster).

I did a search but I came up empty-handed.

I'm sure there is a way, but I think there is a seal on it. If that seal if broken, there isn't any legal way to prove how many miles are on your car. That was the case with my old 320i. Might be different on the Max.

That kind of sucks, but I doubt I will ever be reselling this thing anyway. I don't really have much choice in the matter!

Thanks for the input... does anyone know about the Maxima specifically? I have a 95, if that's relevant (I think the 98/99 clusters might be a little different)

 

I think it's technically illegal to change the odometer reading - but its only going to matter, like you said, only if you try to sell the car. Once you open it (if there is a way to open it) it's going to show. I think you just have to document the purchase of the new gauge cluster and the milage on it an simply record the difference between your original and the new one. I put a new cluster in my Max, kept a sales receipt, and photographed the two together before installing it.

Yes, they can be rolled back. I had mine guage cluster broken, and needed to replace it. My mechanic was able to take it apart and adjust it form the 54k that was on the new one to the 139k that was on the broken one, so the milage would match.
