98 SE Auto vs 97 BMW 528i ...

I knew this would eventually happen, i was checking out the .org forums at work (can you say VQ addict?)and one of my co-workers stopped to check it out and of course i told him all about the max and that i plan to buy one very soon. so he starts telling me about his stock BMW 528i and how it's a very powerful car, yadda yadda yadda, when i get my car we're going to race.

So did anybody ever go up against a 528i? I drove a few when i worked in valet parking, and i remember it being powerful but i don't think it was better than the max. i know the 540i 6 speed is a monster, now that would spank me in the max all over. I'm definitely going to race him regardless and i'm 80% sure i'll beat him, but feedback would be apreciated.

According to Edmunds the 528 has 190HP/206TQ, pretty much exacly what we have. The difference is in weight. The 528 weighs over 3400lbs. Advantage Maxima so far. But every Bimmer I have been in has awesome gearing (never been in a 528) so it should be close... Good luck and let us know how it goes.

528i is not that fast from a standstill. However, someone already mentioned that bimmers are very well geared, especially for highway (autobahn) driving. So race him from a roll and see what happens.

Stock vs. Stock and both automatics, I think the Bimmer will win. As mentioned before, better gearing. Doesn't the Bimmer have a 5-speed automatic?

No... Maybe at a high speed roll, but from a low speed roll or stop... The max will own it... Off the line, he might get you because of RWD, but you will reel him in nicely once you get traction...

You shouldnt have a prob with that one. Now the 99 and up ones would be close, they have much better gearing than the 97-98.

My cousin has a 1999 528i, auto, and I had it for a day since my friend and I were putting in the M5 bumper for him. I had to drive back and forth and what a piece of ****. My friend and I said that I would never spend $40,000 on this heavy piece of sh*t. The car is very heavy and should only come in the V8 edition (540i and M5). Don't get me wrong the car is awesome in handling and comfort but too bad the power is missing. I think my 3rd Gen can keep up.

the other advantage and i would say a big one is that they are RWD from what i remember...they dont' lose torque at wheels as much as we do....

I agree, my parents 530 isn't much better... The 540 on the other hand is a beast... Kind of hard to believe how much of a difference it makes, but it's like driving 2 different cars... Kind of like from a Honda Civic to a G35
