I was wondering what the best way to do a 0-60 test in an automatic? Because I know in a manual you can shift at the peak rpms, but in an automatic I do not have that luxury. Does anyone have a trick to this?

Try manually shifting the gears from 1st thru 2nd.
You can hold the revs till about 6200 or 6300, then shift to second...by the time the shift engages you will have reached about 6500 or so. You can continue this thru 3rd.
It will help a little with your times, as well as giving you more control thru the gears. Careful not to hold the gear to long as you will hit the rev limiter. This can also be used for roll on as well, you don't have to wait for a downshift. For example...sitting at 40 or 50 in 2nd then hitting it, or sitting at 25 or so in 1st then hitting it. well...you can make the most out of your automatic..eheheheh

But the max's peak hp is at like 5500. Would it now be better to shif then?

When you carry a higher speed and rpm's in each gear, you will tehn roll that into the next gear as well. Your rpm's won't drop as much!!! If you didn't get any acceleration in the last 1000 rpm's then yes it would be better to shift, but with mods you'll be able to take advantage of your full rpm range(especially). Try it and see what you think. If your not used to doing this, then start out in first and hold it at 25 or so, then punch it and watch your revs. Make sure to shift a little early so as not to over rev. After time you'll get the hang of it and will be able to pull it off the same every time(all the way to redline if you want it). It will make your auto much more fun at times...eheheheh
I've done this plenty and have not had any problem with the tranny.
In some ways you can have the best of both worlds(stick vs, auto). The only problem is the gearing.....Toooo Looong.

Oh....and the peak horsepower is probably at a higher rev than that. Are you talking about stock pwertrain specs?
I think after certain mods the peak horsepower may go up in rpm's, if not, the power available goes up at the higher revs anyway (usable power). Let me know if yu try this method out....ok?

You can shift your auto manually as mentioned before. At the start, with your left foot firmly on the brake pedal, lightly apply pressure on the go pedal to coax about 1500 rpms on the tach, then... Lift your foot off the brake and stomp the go pedal to WOT... GO!

true..you could power brake tha start, but I wouldn't do that much for longevity reasons. Pretty hard on the drivetrain..you know...being front drive and all.
Yes, if you want to do your own shifting, you should go with a stick, but if you already have a auto...I guess you have to make do.
There are many times I prefer the Auto tranny for convenience and such....
Some of the new tranny's that are auto, but also haev clutchless gear shifting are possibly the best option.
It depends on how good the system is...one of the best of course being the system ferrari has...I guess it goes along with price...The GS400 has a nice system.

ya, i have an auto 95SE and i do that sometimes too. you just need to try shifting and get a feel for your car. Once you stop accelerating in a gear shift out of it, around 6000. Once you've done it you can spin the tires right through first and chirp second (done it). Have fun.

You just hold the brake down and get the rpm's going then release the brake and stomp the gas, then if you do it right you can pop it into second and get a little chirp and take off. I'm running stock SE rims with Cooper Cobras. It's difficult to do but can be done with practice.

I wouldn't advise the dropping of the tranny into gear at redline...ouch. Unless it's a rental...I used to throw the tranny of an automatic rear wheel drive car(like an older towncar or t-bird) into reverse on the highway for thrills....whoa what a rippage..heheheehehehe...you just have to control the steering well.hey it's a rental.heeheheheh....just don't do it at too high of speeds though...whoa nelly.

Oh...you don't have to powerbrake to get a scratch in second gear with the auto...just a couple of mods and your there.

dont exactly understand this. do you mean you have it in neutral then throw it into first gear? or do you use the e-brake(which i never could get to work)?

chirp the tires? Is it when you are on a dead stop or when your slushbox shifts into second while driving? Cause when you are on a dead stop , all you have to do is stomp on your gas pedal and your tires will be screaming. But for upshifting to second, it will take more power or less grippier tires. I can do it with my 98 with stock tires by manually shifting to second when my tach reaches to almost redline. But with my 18" rims, all i can feel is a sudden surge of G's when shifting into second.

When you spin the tires from a dead stop that is a burnout. When you shift to the next higher gear and the tires make a little noise that is a chirp.

when i pull my e-brake up all the way and let the button depress and slam the gas it locks the e-brake in the up position. this sucks cus you can ride away from your burnout, looks pretty lame. do you just pull it up and hold the button in with your thumb then just lower it when you wanna take off?

i thought it just hurt your tranny if you did neutral drops. this does put some extra stress on it, but so does driving it hard.

driving ur auto hard does hurt ur tranny, but thats what happens with any auto driven hard. what im saying is that dropping into gear at high rpms will kill it even sooner. ive read about a 98 accord v6 tranny only lasting 6 months after dropping into gear at high rpms, doing burnouts...etc...
but....if you mind having tranny problems later on..go ahead
