sometimes when i try and start my car it just want start. it turns over but never gets started.

do a search, but it is possible to flood the cylinders so you have to just let it keep cranking and it will eventually start

Mine does a similar thing. It will crank really strong but take a few seconds before it kicks on. Sometimes the problem isn't there. I am suspecting either my fuel pump, or regulator, or maybe even an injector. I am going to try to get a fuel pressure gauge to diagnose further. I have measured the resistance of the front three injectors and they were in spec, so when I install my VI I'll check the other 3 that are covered by the intake manifold. I'm hoping the fuel pressure gauge will help me narrow this down - I've been checking a bunch of stuff. One thing real easy, make sure your gas cap is closed good. I'll post if I find what's causing my problems.
One last thing, it seems like if I open the throttle (step on gas pedal) before I crank the car and then let off when I turn the key to start it seems to start better. That makes me think that enough air isn't getting into the intake - but my idle is perfect
I guess I really haven't offered you anything, huh?? Good luck.

I have the exact same problem. I'm beginning to think that its the fuel pump because it seems to get worse when my gas is running low in the tank. However sometimes I experience the same problem even with a full tank of gas, especially when it is cooler outside... however not as bad as when the gas is low. I'm completely baffled here.

When your tank is real low it's possible to accelerate and shift the gas inside the tank, away from the pump, starving for fuel it will sputter. Is that what you've had?
Can't explain the cold though.

The problem is when I start the car... has nothing to do with accelerating and shifting the gas away from the pump.

Okay I understand that, I thought you said the problem was worse when the tank was low. Lately I've been pressing on the gas pedal while it's off, then letting off the gas pedal and starting the car normally. IT seems to work for me. My car starts up much better. I know this is a bandaid fix but you may want to try it. I still hope to diagnose mine further. Aside from the fuel pump/regulator, you might want to check out your EVAP system too. Good luck

I'm having the same starting problem too. Should I check my fuel filter or just replace it. I have 180k by the way.

if the fuel filter has never been replaced FOR GODS SAKE REPLACE IT!!! and if it has been many miles since the last replacement, it wouldnt hurt, but i cant imagine a filter SO stopped up that it would prevent ignition.

One thing that works for me, other than cranking it for like 5 seconds, is to turn the ignition to the ON position and then OFF again, ON-OFF, then start the car. I guess that lets some fuel in.

i have the same problemo, and i know it isn't a dirty fuel line because i used STP already, and it isn't the fuel filter because i replaced mine already. I'm hoping it's spark plugs. I also have a problem when the engine is cold and when i put it in neutral, it stalls. I hate my max

hey guys i have a 97 with 68K miles on it and i have noticed it do this once or twice in the past 4 or 5 months too...had to crank for a few seconds before it started. I have my car under extended warranty. I plan on taking it in this weekend for some service i'll find out what can cause this and post it.

Re: question about starting the car

I am glad to hear that others are having the same problem I am. This has been driving me crazy for awhile, but it's so intermittant that I haven't gotten up the motivation to do something about it. I was thinking something with the fuel pump/filter as well...

After reading my 95's FSM there is a symptom/diagnoses chart that lists as possible causes

>for hard/no start (cold)
fuel pump circuit
fuel pressure regulator system
injector circuit
IACV-AAC valve circuit
ignition circuit
main power supply and ground circuit

>for hard/no restart (hot)
fuel pump circuit
injector circuit
ignition circuit

>engine stall
fuel pump circuit
fuel pressure regulator system
injector circuit
IACV-AAC valve circuit
igniton circuit

I am not going to go into how to check all the various systems but, maybe this can point you in some directions.
