Odd Electrical/Starting Problem

...seems to be the "theme" of the week on this Forum...anyway,

I had to stop in at work last night for a few hours. Got out of the car, clicked on the alarm remote, signal lights flashed, as usual.

Three hours, later I come out and click the remote, the doors unlock and the interior lights come on.

I turn the key and NOTHING - no "idiot" lights on the dash, no clicking sound from the starter solenoid.

Thinking it was the Nissan alarm system acting up, I got out of the car and clicked the remote - no flashing signal lights this time. I heard the relays trying to lock the doors, but sounding very weak.

So - after repeated attempts at getting the car to start - an hour later (2AM) the CAA is giving me a boost. The car started up just fine, but as I was driving home (10 miles - with the A/C and radio off) I noticed that whenever I used the signals or the brake pedal, the headlights would dim momentarily.

I got home, clicked the remote and, again, no flashing signal lights and the realys sounding very weak.

Of course, the car won't start this morning. The boost ruled out any wiring problems between the ignition switch and the battery and the starter, so I'm thinking that it's ether 1)the alternator; 2) that the battery has just suddenly died (unlikely, because I wasn't having any problems starting earlier in the day and wasn't running the electrical system too hard); or 3) some phantom loose ground that the local Nissan shop will charge me 4 hours to find.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be geatly appreciated.

your on the right track...

charge your battery then load test it. If the battery is good then your alternator is probably shot.

A bad/weak battery will overwork your alternator and eventually kill it too...
