Small "pop" sound when accelerating from stop

Hey all,

For the last few months, I've been hearing a small "pop" or clunk sound coming from the front middle-right of the car whenever I accelerate from a stop. The car is performing fine but this is starting to get on my nerves. Transmission fluid looks good and I have plenty. Has anyone had this experience or know what it could be?

Thanks in advance,

Doug

check to see if your FSTB isnt touching anything under the hood. I had a similar noise problem when I accelerate and it was because when the engine shifts while accelerating, It would bang part of the engine against the FSTB making a weird noise. I had another problem before and that was because My CAI tubing was hitting the fender when I let off the gas or when I step on it hard.

Excellent idea, but I just checked it out and everything seems fine. There's an inch or so of clearance between all metal engine parts and the FSTB.

I think I have the same thing... some dull popping and some clunking when starting from a stop. Has been going on ever since summer started and like you, my nerves are wearing thin! I think some of the noise may be attributable to the brake pads releasing off the rotors. The other noises seem to be coming more from the front, down low somewhere--I think, more on the driver's side on my car. I was under the car checking out my front Y-pipe bolts a few days ago and check if anything was loose. Everything seems OK. My FSTB has plenty of clearance, and the sound seem to come from low down. When turning, the car is silent--so I don't think the strut bearing or CV jts are the problem. It seems only to be when starting from a stop until I hit about 15mph or so... I don't think my manual tranny is involved since at low speeds, if I disengage the clutch, I can hear the clunking/popping.

Any suggestions on what to check would be appreciated! Other than the noises, the car drives fine.

I have the same problem. I'm getting the feeling that it is my struts, the sound seems to eminate low, from the front of the car. I'm just gonna live with it for a while and try and get a new suspension.

CAI hole? I'll have to check out the play there and also the filter in the fender well. My CAI hole is pretty tight though and it is in there fairly snug. Also, I didn't notice this problem until maybe the last 2 months or so. I thought maybe the heat was maybe allowing parts to make noises but you guys have had it in the winter too? That would suck to have these buggers be a permanent thing...

I think I had mine in the winter, but I'm entirely stock (with the exception of the strut brace). it's really hard to tell where the sound is coming from but it sounds like it's almost in the center of the front of the car.

Maybe some play in the drive line, i.e. cv, drive shaft.

I will check the driveshaft... thanks for the suggestion. I doubt it is the CV because I don't hear any noise when I'm turning.

Yeah, I am starting to think it might be the axle. At this point, I'm going to leave it be and exclude everything else. CV boots look good. I've bounced the L/R front sides of the car. Not reproducible. With the front jacked, turning the wheels doesn't duplicate the noise either.

Speebs: I agree that it's hard to isolate the noise. From the cockpit, it just sounds like it's in front in the engine bay, but somewhat low.

What about bad or deteriorating motor mounts? Just guessing here, but a failing bushing might also make some kind of popping sound.

Good luck,
TOM

the reason im thinkin not motor mounts is that i can let the clutch out with no gas and thats when it is the loudest, u would think th emore i revved it the more noise it would make but, it seems to be directly related to the catch point of the clutch, buti could be wrong, so ill know for sure when we change the clutch which should be this weknd
