Weight of the Bridgestone S-03's

Hey, I posted earlier, and someone said the toyo's are lighter than the heavy S-03's, the question is, how much ligher and how much of a difference will it make during acceleration? I have a SC and 5spd if that helps, I was thinking putting down more traction would be important what should I choose, thanks?

P.S. I have giovanna geneva's 18X8.5 rims-silver, prob ~25-30 pounds each

Hello:

If you are concerned with weight, why would you go with 18"x8.5" wheels?

Size makes more of a difference that the tire type.
When I was shopping for some 16" tires, I found the Bridgestones, Dunlops, and Yokahamas were all nearly identical weight for the same size. I don't know about toyo tires.

Yes, it does make enough of a difference that you'll actually notice. Even just cutting 2-3 pounds on the tire will make an improvement. Yes, putting really wide wheels slows down acceleration due to rolling resistance and mainly due to more weight being more outboard from the axle.

Call the people at www.tirerack.com and they can tell you the weight of any tire you are interested in.

You can go to www.wheelweights.net if you are curious about the weight of wheels.

For an example, there is a 3 pound weight difference from a 225/55/16 and a 215/55/16 S-03 tire.

I don't think it's the 18x8.5 size is the problem. The problem is getting Giovanna wheels, which are all heavy wheels. The only light 18x8.5 wheels I could think of are the SSR Competition's and OZ Superleggera's. Of course, there are also the expensive Volk's.

FYI, I have the Bridgestone Potenza RE950 tires on my stock 15" SE wheels on my '96. I weigh them when I got them. They weighed in at 24lbs. That's pretty darn heavy for 15" tires IMO. So you could just imagine how much heavier the bigger size tires are for the Bridgestone's.

I did some research and the S-03's are 27 pounds for 245/40/18, not too bad, I have the rims cause I like them, but they are not that much heavier than the stocks, I think they are 30 pounds each, and the stocks were around 20, I had the volk te37's and sold them because i didn't like they way they looked, I'm about 75% go and 25% show, so I guess the rims will stay.

You have TE-37s and sold them to get cheap heavy knockoff Giovanna brand wheels

Anyhow, the weight difference in my size (235-40-17) between S-03s and T1-S is 5 lbs IIRC. My toyos are 20lbs a piece and I believe the S03s were 25lbs a piece.

I had the Giovanna's before I had the volks, I bought a new car and inherited the Volks (brand new), I would rather sell them and add a nice body kit and some lighting, (HID and custommaxima.com projectors coming out), than keep a wheel that in my opinion looks worse than the Giovanna, but is better in at drag racing. With my SC setup, the torque with the torque it's putting down, I don't think the difference in the Volks is worth the aforementioned benefits.

I have a set of SSR Competition (Type C) wheels with Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 tires. The Kumhos are pretty light (relatively) and the rims I have are 11 lbs a piece. They have never been used cuz I bought them for my old car before I got wrecked it and never had a chance to really enjoy them.

wow... hate to say it but your wheels alone will slow you down so much that who cares how much the tires weigh... anything over 17" and anything over 20lbs. will slow you down greatly.

I beg to differ. I have 22 lbs Konig Monsoons and didn't really notice a difference over my stock 16" rims.

Being able to "notice" a difference and seeing the difference on paper are not the same. I guarantee a 22lb wheel is slowing you down some.

BTW to whoever said they weren't, the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 is a very heavy tire.
