the GXE or GLE models? I am about to buy a '95 or '96 maxima and really want a SE. I'm having a hard time finding one with exactly what I want on it at the right price. Thanks for the help.

well they all share the same engine and transmission, exept the gle doesn't come in manual. If you want fast, get a barebone 5spd GXE.

I thought only the SE had the high performance 190 horsepower engine. Are all the engines exactly the same (with the exception of the manual vs. standard) ?

Thanks.

MB1 is 100% right, all the maximas share the same motor, just find the one you want, but if you really want speed, just make sure whatever it is, its a stick, you wont regret it, 5 speed maximas cant be touched by auto's when both stock

So all the 5spd stock maximas run 0-60 in about 6.5 secs? That is what I've read.

very few people here judge their quickness with 0-60 times. What counts is the 1/4 mile time. a 5spd is able to break into 14's stock. a auto, mid 15's

Here's an irony, the SE is the sport model, but it's probably the slowest of the bunch. Why? All Maximas have the same motor. The GXE weighs the least. The SE comes with a sport tuned suspension, and that seems to add the most weight, except for automatic tranny.

The SE will take corners and carve the canyons better than the GXE or GLE, but going straight thru the 1/4 mile . . .well

Still, I'd rather have the SE. It's the most unique. Body color door handles, white face gages, rear spoiler, standard fogs etc. And I strongly beleive that when Nissan engineers sat down to build the Maxima, the SE was what they were thinking about all along. The other models were to expand it's appeal

Just to clarify:

The 190hp you get in an SE is the SAME 190hp you get in a GXE or GLE. There is no difference whatsoever in the engine mechanics of any of the 3 models.

All the differences in the 3 cars are trim and options, with the exception of the SE's suspension, which can easily be out-done by buying yourself some nice shocks and springs.

My GXE is as fast and will handle better than a stock SE, because I've upgraded my suspension.

I do like the SE's body color grille/door handles and white gauges, however. The SE also has a leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter.

But why spend $1500-$2000 more on an SE just for body colored door handles, white gauges, and leather wrapping???

New shocks only cost about $400....and would out-perform the SE no problem.

So that is why some get the GXE, and some get the SE. It's all about whether or not you mod and budget. If you aren't going to mod your car, get the SE. If you plan on it, get the GXE.

Nope. airmattdog, and many others have Auto SE's.

My GXE came with a power seat and C&C package and sunroof also, so that's no difference.

Oh yes, forgot about fog lights. But you can always buy those and install them later.

The differences between the trim levels are detailed in the FAQ.

And to clear spmething up, the "sprt suspension" is not what adds weight to the SE. The SE gets heavier with the commonly included optional features of sunroof, BOSE and leather seats.

My SE weighs 3030 lbs with no gas and no passenger.

But out of the gen 4's I think that the 95-96 models are a bit faster than the 97-99 models because of less weight.

The SE is nicer overall when you can get a fully loaded one with leather and foglights and everything. Mine's fully loaded and only 3030 lbs. Make sure you get a 5-spd though.

Good luck.

the picture of the grill is slanted downward from right left. I seems to make the trunk look like it's slanted downward from right to left too. So to me it looks like the rear end was squashed or smashed causing the trunk to look like it's bent downward. Not trying to bag just thought you might see it in a different light is all.

From 95-2001, you could get a 5 speed GXE or SE.

For 2002, the 6 speed is exclusive to the SE.

actually i think the later 3rd gen maximas, the SE indeed had more horsepower, but since the 4th gens and the VQ engines came out all maximas have exactly the same engines.

Yup. 92-94 SE had the VE engine (190hp) opposed to the rest of the 3rd gens that had the VG (160hp).

I loved my 92SE, but I sold it for my 99SEL.

Luckily my father bought it from me, so I still see it every day in my driveway!
