The check engine light came on today. The manual diagnosis said it is the TPS and KS…could one be tripping the other? The engine seems to surge randomly at idle. How hard are these to replace…and how much $$? thanks

 

I'm getting the TPS code to, and my engine hesitates and runs real rough. Sounds like it has no oil in it. Had the ECU reset one and it ran perfect for 3 days ,then the check engine light came on and it was back to it's old ways. Anyone know if my problem is with the TPS or the ECU?

 

Your symptoms sound like the TPS is going bad. The KS is tripped constantly with other codes, but it may still be bad. If after replacing the TPS, you still get the KS code, it's bad as well, but in this case, the KS is not causing the idle surging.

 

if i reckon correctly, a bad knock sensor can cause bad gas mileage and lagging performace.

 

replace TPS first, reset ECU, wait a week, check codes again (KS does not trip ECU light, but will yield codes) if KS code still comes up, replace KS.

 

Every dealer i called has to order the TPS. One of them said they have a 96 TPS (i have 97), but it was a different part # and was cheaper than the 97 one. Anyone know if there is a difference? the parts guy didn't know if there was a difference

i got a new tps today from the dealer...tried putting it in and when i give it some gas (rev it to about 3k rpm..not in gear) it drops down and then back up then down etc....so i called the dealer because the part that came out didn't match the one he gave me...he said he check with a tech and it was the right one....i took the new one out, put the old one in, reset the ecu again, and it does the same thing now...rev it up and it drops and then revs...all when i foot isn't moving on the pedel....anyone have any ideas? it might be time to bring it into the dealer

it was $116 + tax at the local dealer...i dunno though b/c i called a few dealers to see if anyone had it in stock and they all quoted me either like $116 or $150.....just make sure you get the right one..
