They just took your car and replace the alternator with out checking if it was good or not. Does every alternator needs to be changed that was installed in 97 to 99 models?

i think they checked it, the recall only comes under cars made between 02/1997 - 02/1998 ....check on your drivers door panel to see when yours was made...i just went to the dealer i bought the car at and i think they looked it up on there records...not sure

Yeah, they make sure your car is one of the ones included by the recall, and then just replace the alternator free of charge. Just had mine done too yesterday. Not a bad deal when you have 95K on an alternator and you get a new one free!

Don't run the following if affected by alternator recall

my SE was manufactured 1/98 and is affected by the recall, so mine goes in next week for a new alternator.

However the dealer suggests to avoid running the following until the alternator is replaced during the recall, otherwise you'll nuke the alternator

1) Rear Defogger
2) Heated Seats (if you guys have this option)

That's good news for Dave, his alternator went kaput the day after the recall was discovered. He thought it was just a coincidence, but after finally getting it replaced, he discovered that the alty was toasted. I hope he can get a refund for his trouble and money spent. Ironically, the week after he gets it done, Nissan's all ready to do the service.

Oh my gosh, I just found out my alternator is bad today, and what a coincidence. I was going to make appointment at Pepboys, to get installed aftermarket one tomorrow. Good thing I checked Maxima.org forum. Thanks

naw... what he probably meant was.. if you have a bad alternator.. try not to use them.. since they'll stress out your alternator..
of course after getting new ones.. you can use them as much as you wnat

I bought my '98 Max on June 18. It has a salvage title on it, but apparently the car was completely fixed from whatever happened to it. You would never know it was salvaged. Anyways, I called my dealership today, as well as 800-nissan1, and I was told that because my vehicle has a salvage title, they will not honor the recall! They said that a salvage title voids the manufacturer's warranty.

I think they should honor the recall on my vehicle, because this is a safety recall (since apparently the alternator could catch on fire), NOT a warranty issue!

The dealership has no say in the matter, and they will not provide you with the refund. This is dealt with specifically by Nissan call 1-800-647-7261 and talk to one of their operators. They should provide you with a fax number after they run your VIN to make sure its one of the ones affect by the recall. With this fax number you will fax your registration, proof of sale and work order. Most work orders have the proof of sale on it (The Bill). Nissan will then decide if you are worthy of a refund. I had some fax trouble but I should clear it all up today. I'll let you all know how it goes. Hope this helps. Just make sure you have your VIN handy when you call.

09/97 and my Vin is in the ranges on the other thread -- WOO-HOO, free alternator.

How long does it take them? Will I have to leave it for a day?

Maybe this will fix that whining noise I have.

look on the side panel of your door and theres a manufacture date on it...and see when it was made, if it was made between 02/1997 - 02/1998 than it'll come under the recall and i don't think it matters which dealership you take it to as long its nissan, i'm not sure about that so if anyone knows, please clarify

I beg to differ in this opinion, but my 1996 Maxima SE has 190,154 miles on it and it is the original alternator! No Problems at all!

Do origonal owners of cars affected by the recall get a letter or something? I just called a local dealer and he seemed shocked that I was calling about this, anyone else get this? They are looking up my VIN number to see if my car is included and are going to call me back, can they tell from the VIN or do they need the car?

call Nissan of N. America... the # is on the first page of this thread i believe... all they need is you vin #... then i guess they contact your dealer or they will send you something so that you can go to the dealer and get it fixed. but when i called, since i'm the second owner, they just changed they info they had on file.

I am having alternator problem right after recall, and dealer told me to wait until 8/15 because it hasn't start yet. So, am I suppose to drive like this? What an irresponsible dealer it is!!

I went to the dealership, all they did was tell me that I will receive a letter if I fall into the category. They didnt even want to listen or speak to me.

That is total B.S. I have a salvage title on mine too. My alternator caught on fire three months ago. I had to literally extinguish it with an extinguisher. Now it wines all the time and I haven't had time to get it replaced. Good thing I saw this recall but they will get an earful. Especially when I have been buying Nissans since I was 16. I guarantee mine will go up in smoke again soon. I'll drive it into their showroom and let them take a wiff!!!!

Can someone verify their ALT part number from recall?

I Got mine done yesterday.. Although dealer told me that they either fix or replace, I can tell they changed whole assembly because I can see shiness from new alt.
Anyway, it looks smaller than older one. Perhaps, they just replaced with 100AMP? I can't tell from paper work because there is no indication of AMP. I went to PART Dept right after they fixed it, and they yelled at me "IT's RIGHT ONE".. Well, can someone verify this part number is for SE(110AMP) or GXE,GLE?

2310M-0L706R ALT ASSY

I went to several nissan parts website, but couldn't verify this part number. Perhaps, this is new part number for recall only.
