Notchy Tranny, Already using Redline MTL
Notchy Tranny, Already using Redline MTL
My transmission still feels notchy after using Redline MTL. I really love the feeling of a good smooth transmission after owning a '91 CRX. So, aside from replacing or rebuilding the trans, what can I do to get a smooth feeling tranny?
Thanks,
-Walter

I have notchy shifting on my 5-speed, not so much when it's cool, but more so after hard driving. I also use MTL since it seemed to work better than MT-90 (and Amsoil - yep, I tried them all.) There's really no other problem with it, other than badly needing a higher ratio 6th speed. What ticked me off was that last week I drove a high milage 90 accord and that thing shifted like silk and had a smooth clutch. I just can't understand why Nissan can't make a decent manual transmission. I guess I (we) will have to live with the notchy shifting in order to enjoy the true benefits of the Max.
My 5-speed is notchy as hell. Sometimes, my arm gets tired after driving in rush hour a while! What strikes me as odd is that I drove someone's '99 with ACT clutch and it was comparatively smooth as silk! He said his max shifter was notchy (compared to other cars he's driven), but to me, it was DRASTICALLY easier than my shifter. We both have MTL-90, short shifters, but on his, I could probably do the shifting with 2 fingers while mine can require a lot of forearm action.

count me in as well
recently flushed the tranny with redline mt-90
it helped a tiny bit
but my shifter is still very hard to move.. it's notchy beyond belief. my clutch is also hard to depress..
the combination of the two makes it very tough to drive..
i don't even have a short throw shifter..
any other ideas?

This is normal, how the maxima clutch and tranny is supposed to be. HP and TQ have an effect on a non-high end vehicle. I personally like it though. You know when it goes into gear. I test drove an eclipse and a Jetta and I hated their shifts. I couldn't tell if they were in or not.

In a nutshell:
MTL is 70W80
MT-90 is 75W90
MTL is a little less viscous during cold weather. I'm not really sure about high temp. behavior. I've got MTL and it was great in the winter months when it was -30 deg C (windchill) outside.

MTL is too thin for warmer weather use. You sacrifice wear for shift feel. The MT-90 is a better choice.

I have a RSX and i actually like the feel of my max more, i like the confident feeling of it going in gear. I had the RSX for about 6 months when i was driving hard, redlining second gear when instead of putting it in 3rd it went in first, it needed some fixing. So i do not want or like a silky shift.
