want a 5spd --- 120k too many miles??

Having some trouble finding a decent 95-96ish 5 speed. My price range would let me get one in the 90,000-100,000 mile range, but I cant find out with those kind of miles.

However I am racking my brain deciding on a 95 SE 5 speed, every option (fogs, spoiler, bose, leather, etc.) with 120,000 miles.

The price is $5450. Driven by this dude's wife since 97. (she put 80,000 miles on it). However the clutch has never been replaces, and the guy said he had a mechanic look at it b/c the clutch felt weird, and the mechainc it doesnt need a new clutch. The mechanic said b/c it wasnt being driven there might of been air in the lines.

Not too knowledgable on transmissions, but I would think that a new clutch is coming soon with that many miles. So should I talk him down to the $4800ish range to pay for a new clutch?

Or should I try to find one with lower miles. I just need some input and some devil's advocates.

I paid 7500 for my 96 se 5spd with everything cept the leather and bose which wasnt a big deal since i still got heated seats and took the stock stereo out anyway. I bought it with 96k on it and it needed a clutch which wasnt cheap at all, clutch and transmision seals ended up being like 700 with labor...just to give you an idea

It all depends if you want to deal with the possibility of the clutch being replaced. A touch under $5k would be a good deal, but i'm sure it will need to have some stuff replaced along the way.

test drove it tonight --- man I love those 5 speeds. It moved nicely.

The leather looks great, the stereo sounds good... paint is average, a few nicks and such.

Clutch wasnt slipping at all, it drove well.

I dunno. I'll see if I can talk him down.

The price is right around Kelley blue book for the mileage and all the options for good condition (which its in)...

In fact Blue Book was $5500, he wanted $5450.

I couldnt believe how hard it pulled, he wasnt in the car when I test drove it, so naturally I gone on it hard. It was great. No way I can settle for an automatic now.

120k is a lot. But if you can work on the little $hit that will go wrong, I'd say go for it.

Go for it. That sounds like a good deal. But plan on replacing the clutch, which is gonna be around $500, I assume.. and with that kind of miles, either the clutch master cylinder or a slave cylinder might have to be replaced too, which is around 200-300 dollars.

But dont use that to try to talk down the price too much. You have to be reasonable. I think $5000, give or take a few hundred, is a good price. Its hard to find a 5spd 4th gen. If you like it, buy it. I have 120k miles on my 98, and everything is in great condition. I bought mine new.

Well mine 95 GXE 5 speed) has 115K with original clutch AND orginal brake pads. Clutch pulls hard and will spin 2nd gear no problem. I have had the car sinc new. $5400 is VERY fair for an SE. I have had offers around $6K for my GXE and could probably get high 5s for it. Budget yourself for a clutch in the next 30K miles or so b/c even though they last they usually need replaced by 150K. If its made it to 120K its also an indication of how th car was driven. If it was dirven hard or had a lot of city miles on it - it would NOT have made 100K. I juts put 60K mile tires on my car and expect to have it when those wear out...yours will be going to. Hey I once saw a Dodge Dynasty with 370K mniles with orig engine and tranny...if that can do it a Max sure can.

Re: want a 5spd --- 120k too many miles??

I would try to work down the price. What kind of maintance records do they have? When was the last tune-up? If you are not mechanically inclined or not willing/able to spend money on repairs then look elsewhere. However if you like working on cars then go for it. I would also recommend that the maxima be placed on a lift and inspected for any crash damage underneath. At the minimium I would allocate money for a tune-up.

Good Luck!

He posted that a month ago guys. Adam: did you end up getting it, or did you find something else that suited your needs better? I'd say that's not bad of a price. I bought my 96 SE 5spd w/every option for $6k a month ago, but it had 114k miles and had regular maintenance including 2nd clutch.

got another max

I waited too long on the fully loaded max, it was sold by the time I was going to arrange for my mechanic to take a look at it before I bought it.

However I did find a 96 GXE, no options at all, standard everything including the transmission.

It had 94000 miles and I bought it for $6000.

Minus the leather and the sunroof, I'll probably add aftermarket fogs, stereo, and suspension so its probably better that I started out with what I got.

Dont get me wrong, I am very happy with the car. A small upgrade from my 90 GXE Maxima.

I just bought a 97 SE 5 speed for a couple of hundered under 7k.. after tags, tax and registration. It had 115k miles. Car drives very good to me, i had a 98 gxe with 70k and i do not see any difference except the 5 speed being faster

Milage isn't that bad.. it will run longer than you probably plan on keeping it.. so i think that's a great deal.

very good price
don't let the milage scare you.
