You may have heard of the Valve Body Modification. This is of interest to the Maxima racer or performance enthusiast.
The valve body can be removed without taking the transaxle out of the car. To get the VB Mod you remove the valve body assembly from your transaxle and send it off to "Don in Texas". He modifies your hardware and sends it back. You install it with fresh ATF.
The VB Mod is said to make the transmission shift faster and without slippage. It is supposed to improve acceleration and transmission life. I can't vouch for these claims because my Maxima doesn't have the VB mod. (My Maxima is a 5-speed.)
I can vouch for it.
I got this mod about a month ago. I was really impressed with the quickness of the shifts. The harder you get on it, the harder it shifts. It's great. I wasn't holding the steering wheel tight enough the first time I got on it and about lost it in the ditch. Torque steer was pretty crazy now that all the power was going to the wheels so quickly. I love it.
Ya, i want to get the VB mod too, i think i'm gonna get one. how much downtime is there for your car and how hard is it to do

It really isn't difficult to do, but it takes some time and is a bit messy. Figure on about 4 hours of work if you haven't done it before, maybe more. You'll need about 5-6 quarts of transmission fluid, 3 or more cans of brake cleaner, and a torque wrench. I think both the transmission fluid pan and valve body are held in by 10mm sockets so that could be the only size you need. You could try to get one out of Don, but I think he's holding off until he gets his web site up then he's only selling through that. Maybe shoot him an email at dgcoop@swbell.net to figure out what's going on.

The VB kit goes for $450 shiiped toyour door, then you swap it out adn send Don your old one. All the VB's are modified adn rebuilt.
The VB eliminates the weak point in auot transmissions, the shifting in between gears. It will eliminate the slip in it. Your trans may run hotter, that is why everyone recommends a Haydens trans cooler (403 or 404). Your trans will also last longer, shift faster, emliminate up to 6/10ths of a sec off your quater mile, and now you can chirp your tires from 1st to 2nd.
The Haydens 404 is a larger unit then the 403. Both are adequate for any of our needs. A 403 runs about $40 and the 404 runs around $50-$60.
You need the brake cleener for the internals/ trans filter to clean it out.
Who has has done their own VB?

Its not a big deal to install. If you can raise your car and follow directions, you can do it in about 3-4 hours and thats taking your time.
For more info on the last 3 VB's of the year, look under "Parts for Sale" forum, under VB's in Dallas. Details on how to purchase one of the last 3 for the year are there.
Ho, ho, ho.....
