After a lot of speculation i finally decided to get a new timing chain,sprockets,guides and tensioners and as my car had lot of carbon in the EGR system i wanted to clean that too!.Nissan wanted almost $1300 for the timing chain and another $150 for the egr cleanup (that's 2 hrs of labour).I know a guy who works on foreign cars and he quoted $1050 for the whole job

i picked up my car yesterday, no rattle at all and lot of peace of mind when i drive.The best $1000 i've spent this year.

My noise/rattle came when I reached around 30,000 miles. Luckily, Nissan repaired it under warranty. They replaced ALL my chains and tensioners (timing chain and both cams). Now, that I am well over 100,000 miles, the noise is slightly noticeable again, especially when driving around in 90+ degree weather. I'm not too worried about it, though. Just as long you keep up on your scheduled oil changes, the timing chain should last the life of the car. (Hopefully--"knock-on-wood!" )
