5speed conv.

i have been burdended with the automatic transmision. well i love my car to death, but people are saying if you do labor yourself u only spend like 1100 or so. witch i think is worth loosing about .7 on your 1/4 mile times. if i were to do a conversion could i sell my auto tranny?? the prevoius owner replaced it 14,000 miles ago so it pretty new. if i did sell it how much would i get? i dont have all the cash for a swap so i would like to get some money for my auto. do all of you think that a swap is worth it, or should i just spend 500 on VB mod. thanks a lot in advance for any input and sorry about the length

if you are getting conversion just for speed i WOULD NOT recommend it...you can buy a turbo, nos, or supercharger for around that much and get much more speed...i did conversion, for like 10% speed and 90% enjoyment of driving stick...sometimes the simplest things aren't the best and auto is just too boring...stick, u can NEVER be perfect, there is always something new to learn and that's why i love it so much....a real racer, no a real driver can drive stick and that's what i feel myself to be....

u CAN sell your auto trans if it has low mileage but no junkyard or what not will take it if it has like over 80,000 miles or so, atleast not for a great price...mine had 110,000 miles and although i haven't tried hard to sell it, i know its gonna be hell and a half to get descent money if money at all for it....

that's my IMO...p.s....i love my car more than ever now....

I did it 50% for speed, 50% enjoyment. Also, 5spd wont fall apart like the auto when you abuse it (except for the bearings). You'll probably get **** for your auto though.

well ofcourse the extra speed is a factor, i love driving stick. my dad has a stick car and i love it. there is so much spirited driving where as in an auto its so boring. im dont have a lot of money though and thats why i am asking if i should just get a vb mod instead. im getting a 2k2 6speed in like 3 years, so i dont know if i should bother investing the money for the manual, doesnt that lower resale value??

Have fun finding a 5spd trans for our car at a salvage yard. Or at least I had a hard time finding one at a salvage yard. I got my 5spd trans here on the org for less than 200 shipped to my door, and did a rebuild of the trans with my friend.

If you or your friends have a lot tools and has knowledge on what he or she is doing, you should be fine.
If not don't do it.

You make it sound so easy.

How much did you pay for that 01 trans?

If you search, you'll find many threads about this. There are stickies about them as well.

ok ive read the posts and im not sure if its worth it, i might be better off selling my car and buying a 5speed, my car is in very good condition, i could still get good money for it, all nice leather(black) wood dash, very well maintained too, what do you goys think? how did your conversions go? would it be easier to buy another car or do it and love my car more

Depends on your mechanical ability as to which is easier. Overall, it's your own personal choice, not for us to make.

I did mine last year, and for me it made the drive more fun, except for running on highway.

A lot of people told me to just sell my auto maxima and buy a 5spd maxima when I told them I want to swap my trans to a 5spd. I think they told me to sell it cause they thought it is going to be cheaper than to swap. Over all I did my swap with labor and all new bearings in the trans for about $1100.
I had a really good friend that helped me do it so labor was cheap for me.

My car took about a week to do, including time for rebuilding the trans.
Also we took our time doing it too I think.
Right now I think I can do a swap in about 2-3 days, w/o the time for rebuilding a trans cause I don't know how to do that.

So it is your choice.

Isnt there a way to put a 6spd in there? if so I think it would be a better investment.

Looks like it might be easier for me to just sell the car and get another one that's stick.
