My GLE has a limiter :(

I was out on ocean parkyway tonight(long empty straightaway highway for those who don't know) and was gonna try and hit my topspeed. I have gone around 120 MPH before on the same road but always stopped because of traffic. Tonight was perfect for it but once I hit around 118-119 the car jolted and the rpms dropped down to 3500 and the car just completely stopped accelerating. It was still pulling pretty hard up to the point and definitely could have done more. So that statement about all SEs and GLEs not having the limiter is false.

Errrrr ... all SE's do not have limiters.

And my GXE had no limiter.

And are you postive you have a GLE and not a GXE?

I'm sure my car is a GLE cause it says it on the back of the car and it has everything a 97 GLE would have.

when i was driving someone else's max, it was a GXE, and it just died at 115.....maybe you think your car has more power, but it really doesnt ....j/k ...but thats really wierd....i thought it was SE, no limiter at all, GXE mostly all if not all, and GLE, some had limiters?

I think that assumption would be called a fallacy. You really don't have much evidence, you car could have just shifted to 4th.

98 GLE

I have a 98 GLE, and have broken the 120 mark. Bought it used, so maybe someone else doctored it, but I've not noticed a limiter.

i remember when i first got my car from my parents, (they bought it new, handed it down to me, well i handed em 11k, and then they gave me the car), i was foolin around tryin to hit the top speed....stopped at 117....i was sure i had a limiter at the time...i never drove in a car that hit a limiter, so i didnt know what it felt like ....then a few weeks later, i did it again, same thing....this time i turned off OD, and it went another 2-3 mph (uphill, so i knew it was still pushing)....so whats the point of my post?....change your fuel filter....ive hit 130 since i changed it....and like someone else said, the drop in rpm is probably gears changing

I did the vin number check and my car is definitely a GLE. After I think it hit the limiter I kept flooring it for a while after that and the needle just stayed pinned exactly where it was.

That doesn't sound like a limiter to me... your not driving a Ferrari... it takes time to change speed up there.

If it were a limiter you would probably "bounce" off of it over and over, like a slow rev limiter... That's how it was in my fathers Suburban (he was driving... I wouldn't drive that thing that fast ).

Why doesn't someone with a GXE whose experienced this chime in.

I've gotten my GXE just slightly past 130 mph. Then I ran out of road and had to slow down.

I guess I should say someone with a GXE with a limiter.

You will know if you have a limiter.

It is a very violent experience to hit it...you dont just stop accelerating, your engine drops to idle all of a sudden.

it's true about the car just stopping to an idle. I've been in a friend's '00 monte carlo, and the limiter kicks in at 105. it feels like the car has shifted extremly hard, and then it's like you're in neutral, and no matter how hard you jam on the gas, you're not going any faster. I have a 99 SE, and i've hit 125 before wussing out. besides which, at 125 whatever civic or accord i'm racing has usually dropped out at that point

Feul Filter

Change your feul filter and try it again. You'll be surprised. The feul filter is one of, if not the most ignored maintenance item. A clogged one really takes away top end pull. Change the filter every 15K miles.

Seriously is very well could be maintainance. Previous to my 60k mile service my '96 GXE auto would seem to cut off at 120MpH. I would not bounce off a limiter or anything, I just could not go faster. After the 60k service I have gone 133MpH (or so according to my speedo).

speed limiter??

I just dynoed my 98' GLE a few days ago at New England Dyno. I dynoed for top speed then for power. My top speed on the dyno; 191 mph. Thats the top speed with the car hittin the rev limiter in 4th gear. This is no BS. I have had this car since the factory and i have done all the modifications. I have only gone 130 on the highway but there is def no speed limiter on 98' GLE.

You still realize you would get no more than 150MpH on the road (if you're lucky), right?

That is exactly what happened to me. I was pulling pretty hard up to 118 and then the car jolted a little and it felt like it completely stopped accelerating. Both the tach and the speedo stopped moving for a good 10 seconds until I gave up. It wasn't like a normal upshift into 4th gear. For those who know they have hit the limiter, is that what happens? Also, I've gone that same speed before with a full car and this time was only with one other person so I don't think it could be that the car didn't have enough power.

if you've gone past 120 before, then you know there is no limiter and that you need to change your fuel filter. The other thing is, i've read someplace that there are problems reaching the full 140 mph top speed because the tranny won't shift into the higher gear. What then happens is you need to turn Overdrive off so you get the extra torque to push it into higher gear. That only applies to automatics, tho, and since you have a 5 speed......i have no idea. Have a nissan tech look at it. Also, i know some bimmers and acuras have a device that can reprogram the cars computer to kill the speed limiter in it. maybe there's one for maximas too?

Thanks for the info about turning overdrive on and off. Now that I think of it I remember hearing something about that on this site before. I haven't gone past 120 before I've gotten to the same point I think I hit the limiter before with more people in the car.

That would be pretty amazing to see a 4th gen hit 150mph... I'd think that the highest this side of forced induction would be 140mph (real speed)...
