Automatic Maxima Killing me!

I hate it when im cruising around town and then some guy comes up next to me in any kind of car with about equal horsepower such as a Camaro V6 or Mustang V6 and having to race those guys off the line Can anyone tell me if they know anything about a Torque Converter with a higher stall? This 2000rpm crap is killing me especially when i have to race 5-speed cars . Besides neutral dropping my car can anyone give me info on how to speed things up off the line

Well Neutral dropping isn't going to do a thing except shorten the life of your transmission. Second of all, if you're an auto, what do you expect really? If a car of equal or similar horsepower is racing you and they know how to drive a stick semi decent, then you're most likely done for, the sad truth. Hey I actually remember meeting you at a car show in Phoenix, I just looked at your sig. Hook up that bottle and smoke em.

brake torque... hold the brake while slightly pressing on the gas reving at about 1.5k...when green let off brake, slam gas to the floor.. there isn't much we auto's can do to get off the line any quicker..

Bad idea. If you want the best launch, rev to 1.5k, then don't stomp the gas to the floor. Push it about 3/4 of the way to minimize wheelspin, and then just go ball out on the gas. Slamming the gas will just spin your tires for a second and kill your launch.

You just need a bit more power. I haven't had a 5 or 6 speed Max beat me off the line yet.

yeah I was talking to a guy who works at a local performance shop, he had a crazy modded 4thgen till about a week ago he sold it. Anyway he said the best way to race a 5 speed or a similar car is to drop the car into 1st..hold brake and push gas to 2000 rpms or so...let go of break and floor it...when you get to 5000 rpms switch back into (D) and then redline it and then drop it into 2nd and finish it off. Now this guy helped me install my CAI the other day and after it was done we took it for a spin..and I shifted my auto like that above and it defintly launched like a ****** ****er, I have driven a stock 5 speed and I have to say mine felt like it was pulling harder..still wish I had a 5 speed though, but thats life.

I dont understand why you guys feel the need to neutral drop or launch at 2000 or so.

I am auto too, and I feel like I have enough power and grip to race against similar horsepowered 5spds.

I dont know how other ppl launch, but what I do is this.
I step on it, but not WOT, to about 4000 in 1st gear. Then I put the pedal to the metal. Against a real tough competition, I just go WOT from standstill and engage the NOS at 3000 in 1st gear. Works very nicely. And my gear is in D all this time.

am i the only one here or are there others whose stall speeds are at about 2300-2400 rpm?? why does everyone keep saying 2000? granted, i've modded my car, which will change the characteristics of a t/c, but i've seen plenty of modded ones with 2000 stall speed. hm.... oh, btw guy, you should just do a brake torque like the previous member mentioned. remember the 3/4 throttle if you've got even a few mods, otherwise you'll be wheel hopping for an eternity.

I know you can get mechanical shift kits(i.e. VB Mod) and you can get an electronic shift improver to make it shift when you want using 1 and 2, and a torque converter will help. You will NOT lose horsepower(see link for info). Changing gear ration will also help power, but will hurt gas mileage and Top Speed. I'm sorry, but you CAN make an auto perform pretty dang close to what a Manual does. You just have to get the right stuff.

dropping into neutral and kill my tranny?

MAN... i've been doin' this for like monthes now.. i thought it would save gas.. i usually shift it from D to N at stops.. and shift back to D manually when i go... at red lights... not stop signs.. will that kill my tranny.. i thought it doesn't do anything anyways.. some people told me it doesn't even save gas... i guess i jus got use to it.. but if it kills the tranny.. i'll change my habit.. thanx man!

No they are talking about revving it in N and then, while you are still revving, putting it in D.

its not as bad as neutral bombing, but it will still cause pre-mature wear

I don't understand either, please explain how changing from neutral to drive is any different from reverse to drive if your foot is on the brake.

Eh, don't listen to him, he just wants more posts . If you're at a stop at a red light and are sitting still in neutral, and just put it into drive and go from there, there should be no harm done to your tranny. However, it is not a good idea to be in neutral while the revs are up at all, or if the car is in motion above an idle. At least this is what I've heard around here. Peace

if you actually neutral drop ie place in neutral and rev to 3000 or 4000 rpm the slam into drive it causes the torque converter to apply lots of added pressure to the clutches in the auto tranny. these clutches in the auto tranny will ware faster then the clutch of a 5 or 6 speed. it be kinda like well lets say cars could magically float. your in gear gas down and tires rotating... then the car just drops while tires spinning. due to the force the spinning tires would hop and try to grip on the road dont know if that makes sence... think of wheel hop all the pressure trying to get grip but slipping and bouncing kinda the same thing when you neutral drop a car.

My maxima is also a auto and i normally pull it into D1 and brake torque. hold then brake in and give about half throttle i normally reach 3000 rpms. when the light turns green i increase to about 3/4 throttle until i know i have grip then smash it and at redline shift into d2 works for me against 5 speed cars
